Mike Bost<\/a> as their top veterans policy voice for the next congressional session, tapping him to replace retiring Tennessee Rep. Phil Roe as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2020\/12\/01\/house-republicans-to-pick-new-top-veterans-policy-leader-this-week\/\" target=_blank>ranking member on the House Veterans\u2019 Affairs Committee<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bost, 59, was selected over <a href=\"http:\/\/caucus.militarytimes.com\/speaker\/jack-bergman\/\" target=_blank>Michigan Rep. Jack Bergman<\/a> to lead minority party work on the committee. He is a Marine Corps veteran who has been in Congress since 2016, and currently serves as the ranking member on the committee\u2019s panel on disability assistance and memorial affairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although Democrats will continue to control the House next session, the committee\u2019s ranking member leadership post is viewed within the veterans community as a key role in the next Congress, both because of its influence in supporting new policy legislation and its potential role as key critic of the incoming Democratic presidential administration\u2019s veterans policies.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2020\/12\/02\/vietnam-veterans-with-high-blood-pressure-other-serious-illnesses-would-get-presumptive-benefit-status-in-final-defense-budget-bill\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"236\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP18026654629891.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Vietnam veterans with bladder cancer, other serious illnesses would get presumptive benefit status in final defense budget bill<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Hypertension, bladder cancer, Parkinsonism or hypothyroidism would all be included as presumed conditions caused by Agent Orange exposure under the plan.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a statement, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., said that Bost is \u201csteadfastly committed to service and getting results, and will be a strong leader for our veterans.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In an interview with Military Times ahead of Wednesday\u2019s vote, Bost said he is hopeful the committee will be able to focus on bipartisan reforms for the Department of Veterans Affairs, but also warned that he won\u2019t be \u201cbullied into bipartisanship\u201d by Democrats on issues where there is disagreement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cRecently we have seen quite a bit of partisanship [on the committee], and that is a little bit frustrating,\u201d he said. I hope that we can move completely away from that focus on the issues because this isn\u2019t about whether you\u2019re Republican or Democrat, this is about the needs of those veterans who have served our country.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bost says his priorities will center on toxic exposure issues (particularly support for younger veterans exposed to burn pits in Iraq and Afghanistan), continued suicide prevention efforts, and revamping transition programs for troops leaving the military for civilian life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He also said he brings personal experience to the disability claims process, having been denied benefits multiple times in the past for hearing loss suffered while he was in the military.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2020\/12\/02\/the-number-of-veterans-in-congress-will-drop-to-lowest-level-since-at-least-ww-ii\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP20309061957043.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">The number of veterans in Congress will drop to lowest level since at least WWII<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The number of veterans in Congress has declined steadily over the last five decades.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSo I have the passion to fight for our veterans, so that they\u2019re not denied benefits that are due them on technicalities,\u201d he said. \u201cThat doesn\u2019t mean I want to give things away for nothing. But if somebody is having problems, that\u2019s why we have those services available.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rep. Mark Takano, D-Calif., is expected to return as the House Veterans\u2019 Affairs Committee chairman next session. Leadership of the Senate Veterans\u2019 Affairs Committee \u2014 chairman Sen. Jerry Moran, R-Kansas, and ranking member Sen. Jon Tester, D-Mont. \u2014 are also expected to remain unchanged heading into next year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new Congress is scheduled to be seated on Jan. 3.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rep.
