{"id":21786,"date":"2021-11-24T04:07:47","date_gmt":"2021-11-24T04:07:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2021\/11\/24\/pentagon-creates-new-organization-to-investigate-mysterious-objects-in-the-sky\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T06:15:23","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T06:15:23","slug":"pentagon-creates-new-organization-to-investigate-mysterious-objects-in-the-sky","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2021\/11\/24\/pentagon-creates-new-organization-to-investigate-mysterious-objects-in-the-sky\/","title":{"rendered":"Pentagon creates new organization to investigate mysterious objects in the sky"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Faced with growing concerns about mysterious objects in the sky, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2021\/06\/25\/klaatu-barada-who-knows-intel-report-is-inconclusive-about-ufos\/\" target=\"_blank\">especially over military installations and training ranges<\/a>, the Pentagon has created a new organization to search for answers about where they came from and what threats they may pose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Formerly the purview of the Navy, the investigations into unidentified aerial phenomenon will now be conducted by the Airborne Object Identification and Management Synchronization Group, nested in the office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Intelligence &amp; Security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIncursions by any airborne object into our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.faa.gov\/air_traffic\/publications\/atpubs\/aim_html\/chap3_section_4.html\" target=\"_blank\">[Special Use Airspace] <\/a>pose safety of flight and operations security concerns, and may pose national security challenges,\u201d the Pentagon said in a statement Tuesday night announcing the change. \u201cDOD takes reports of incursions \u2014 by any airborne object, identified or unidentified \u2014 very seriously, and investigates each one.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Special Use Airspace, according to the Federal Aviation Administration, includes areas over military bases, training ranges and national security areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This decision to create the new organization with the unwieldy acronym of AOIMSG, was ordered by Deputy Defense Secretary Kathleen Hicks, \u201cin close collaboration with the Director of National Intelligence,\u201d the Pentagon said. It comes in the wake of a June report by the ODNI into objects in the sky that found <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dni.gov\/index.php\/newsroom\/reports-publications\/reports-publications-2021\/item\/2223-preliminary-assessment-unidentified-aerial-phenomena\" target=\"_blank\">no explanation for 143 of 144 incidents reviewed<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While investigators found no extraterrestrial links in reviewing those sightings of aircraft or other devices apparently flying at mysterious speeds or trajectories, they also came up with no conclusions. Instead, the report highlighted the need for better data collection about what\u2019s increasingly seen by Democrats and Republicans as a national security concern. In all but one of the sightings investigated, there was too little information for investigators to even broadly characterize the nature of the incident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There were 18 cases in which witnesses saw \u201cunusual\u201d patterns of movement or flight characteristics, the report said. But more analysis was needed to determine if those sightings represented \u201cbreakthrough\u201d technology, the report added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt is critical that the United States maintain operations security and safety at DoD ranges,\u201d Hicks said in <a href=\"https:\/\/media.defense.gov\/2021\/Jun\/25\/2002749916\/-1\/-1\/1\/DEPUTY-SECRETARY-OF-DEFENSE-MEMORANDUM-ON-UNIDENTIFIED-AERIAL-PHENOMENA-ASSESSMENTS.PDF\" target=\"_blank\">a June 25 memo<\/a>. \u201dTo this end, it is equally critical that all U.S. military aircrews or government personnel report whenever aircraft or other devices interfere with military training. This includes the observation and reporting of UAPs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The report, said Hicks, \u201calso confirmed that the scope of UAP activity expands significantly beyond the purview of the Secretary of the Navy, who heads the Unidentified Aerial Phenomena Task Force (UAPTF), and suggested process improvements to ensure timely collection of consistent data on UAP.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AOIMSG \u201cwill synchronize efforts across the Department and the broader U.S. government to detect, identify and attribute objects of interests in Special Use Airspace (SUA), and to assess and mitigate any associated threats to safety of flight and national security,\u201d the Pentagon statement said Tuesday night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Overseeing that will be another organization with an unwieldy acronym within the USD(I&amp;S), called the Airborne Object Identification and Management Executive Council. AOIMEXEC will be comprised of DoD and Intelligence Community members, and will \u201coffer a venue for U.S. government interagency representation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The June report also identified the need to make improvements in processes, policies, technologies and training to \u201cimprove our ability to understand UAP,\u201d the Pentagon said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the coming weeks, the DoD will issue \u201cimplementing guidance,\u201d which will provide details about who will direct the AOIMSG, as well as its organizational
