Richard C. \u2018Tito\u2019 Lannom"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">UNION CITY, Tenn. \u2014 A Navy bombardier and navigator from Tennessee who served during the Vietnam War and was missing in action for 50 years before his remains were identified is being laid to rest this weekend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A funeral service for Navy<a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2019\/02\/12\/remains-of-missing-vietnam-war-sailor-identified\/\" target=\"_blank\"> Lt. Richard C. \u201cTito\u201d Lannom<\/a> is scheduled Saturday at<a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2019\/02\/12\/remains-of-missing-vietnam-war-sailor-identified\/\" target=\"_blank\"> <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/discoveryparkofamerica.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Discovery Park of America<\/a> in Union City. A news release from the west Tennessee museum and education center said services are set to include a funeral, a processional with motorcycle escorts, and a graveside service with full military honors and flyover by two <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boeing.com\/defense\/ea-18g-growler\/\" target=\"_blank\">EA-18G Growler<\/a> aircraft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An Obion County native, the 27-year-old Lannom was assigned to the aircraft carrier Enterprise when his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airspacemag.com\/military-aviation\/legends-of-vietnam-shoulder-to-shoulder-57611944\/\" target=_blank>A-6A Intruder aircraft <\/a>went missing during a March 1968 mission over North Vietnam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lannom and the pilot were declared missing after a search and rescue mission failed to locate the plane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A Vietnamese <a href=\"https:\/\/www.icmp.int\/the-missing\/where-are-the-missing\/vietnam\/\" target=_blank>Office for Seeking Missing Persons<\/a> team excavated a crash site in late 2017. Lannom was identified in September 2018 through DNA testing and evidence found at the site.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2018\/12\/28\/this-is-what-happened-when-an-air-force-pilot-got-assigned-to-a-navy-carrier\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"163\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Midway2.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">This is what happened when an Air Force pilot got assigned to a Navy carrier<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Ron Williams remembers his temporary duty assignment flying Douglas A-3B \u201cWhales\u201d from a carrier as the most challenging two years of his career<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lannom was a high school athlete in Union City and he graduated from the University of Tennessee at Martin, according to the museum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His widow, Charlotte Shaw, led a letter-writing campaign in support of the search for Lannom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;He loved being from a small town,&#8221; said Shaw, who eventually remarried. &#8220;I wanted him to return to the home he loved.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee declared Saturday a day of mourning for Lannom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Visitation is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. at Discovery Park of America.
