McFarlin faces multiple criminal charges in both military and civilian courtrooms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Assigned to the aircraft carrier <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2019\/04\/03\/nimitz-sailor-cops-to-multiple-drug-charges\/\" target=_blank>Nimitz<\/a>, the 39-year-old\u2019s alleged infractions began that evening in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bremertonwa.gov\/\" target=_blank>Bremerton<\/a>, Washington, near the carrier\u2019s home port.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bremerton Police Department officers responded to an apartment parking lot in the 2000 block of Wheaton Way around 7:50 p.m. after McFarlin\u2019s friend reported that the chief \u201cwas very intoxicated, refused to get out of the car and was getting angry,\u201d according to a police report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The friend told officers he had picked up McFarlin at a Kohl\u2019s department store and brought him to an apartment to \u201csleep it off.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2019\/09\/17\/fired-helo-squadron-co-bound-for-the-brig\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"157\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Neuhart2.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Fired helo squadron CO bound for the brig<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The case of Cmdr. John M. Neuhart wound through the courts for nearly three years.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After McFarlin vainly reached for the car keys \u2014 his buddy had removed them from the ignition \u2014 he \u201cwalked into the bushes, falling down about 8 to 10 feet into the wood line on the East (sic) side of the parking lot,\u201d the responding officer wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The friend said that \u201cMcFarlin lives on the USS Nimitz during the week but has a home elsewhere out of town for weekends.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The police officer wrote that he saw the chief in the bushes. When Emergency Medical Service personnel tried to talk to McFarlin, he appeared &#8220;extremely intoxicated,\u201d the officer added. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He and the medics dragged the 6-foot 260-pound McFarlin from the vegetation and into the parking lot, according to police and court records.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When a Bremerton Fire Department medic crewman attempted to examine McFarlin, the chief flailed and struck him in the leg, the report states. So the police officer and the medic held down his arms until he calmed down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMcFarlin was confrontational with fire staff, saying if anybody said anything to his command, something like it would end them or their careers,\u201d the officer wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2019\/09\/12\/junior-sailor-facing-charges-over-use-and-distribution-of-a-bevy-of-drugs\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"208\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Riveracaban.jpg.png?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">LHD sailor charged with LSD crimes<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The seaman will have his day in court this November.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">McFarlin was transported to nearby Harrison Medical Center but about an hour later police received another call indicating that the chief \u201cwas being pinned down by security after assaulting the charge nurse,\u201d according to the report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">McFarlin\u2019s size forced responding officers to use two sets of handcuffs to restrain him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A nurse later told them she had entered McFarlin\u2019s room and the chief ordered her to \u201cshut the damn curtains,\u201d the police report states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 36-year-old woman said she couldn\u2019t do that but then the chief \u201cgrabbed her by the collar of her jacket and began to pull her towards him,\u201d the officer wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cShe had to quickly get herself out of her jacket in order to get away\u201d from McFarlin, according to the police report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe had ill intent in his eyes when he grabbed me,\u201d the nurse said.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2019\/06\/06\/why-a-chief-lost-his-anchors-last-month\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/635949295909170000-courtjpg-Cropped.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Why a chief lost his anchors last month<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">He pleaded guilty at a court-martial trial.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A hospital security guard told police that he entered the room and found McFarlin putting on his backpack. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">McFarlin uttered something like \u201csomeone\u2019s gonna die today\u201d and then \u201csquared up\u201d with the 62-year-old guard. Then the chief took a sip from a metal bottle, secured the lid on top and swung it at him, the report states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The guard told the officers that he blocked McFarlin\u2019s blow with one arm and struck his neck with the other before he and other guards took the chief to the deck and pinned him. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDue to McFarlin\u2019s level of intoxication and probable cause to arrest, he was medically cleared by a doctor to be transported to jail,\u201d the officer wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Given the chief\u2019s \u201cassaultive nature,\u201d police put him in a restraining device called \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.saferestraints.com\/products\/\" target=_blank>The Wrap<\/a>,\u201d but had to remove it when they got to the patrol car because McFarlin was too big to fit in the back with it on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">McFarlin was booked on two counts of <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.leg.wa.gov\/Rcw\/default.aspx?cite=9A.36.031\" target=_blank>3rd degree assault<\/a>, with bail set at $20,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/odysseyportal.courts.wa.gov\/ODYPORTAL\/Home\/WorkspaceMode?p=0\" target=_blank>Kitsap County Superior Court<\/a> records show a judge approved his pretrial release the following day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">McFarlin\u2019s trial on civilian charges is slated for Nov. 12.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/tomweaverlaw.com\/about\/\" target=_blank>Thomas Weaver<\/a> \u2014 the chief\u2019s criminal defense attorney listed in court records \u2014 did not return calls seeking comment.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the meantime, the military placed McFarlin on \u201crestriction in lieu of arrest\u201d and charged him with aggravated assault, drunk and disorderly conduct, communicating a threat and two specifications for assault consummated by a battery, according to a Navy charge sheet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">McFarlin\u2019s military attorney also did not respond to requests seeking comment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The chief\u2019s special court-martial is scheduled for Nov. 18, according to Ensign Blagoj Petkovski, a Nimitz spokesman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe accused is presumed innocent until proven guilty,\u201d Petkovski added in an email.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Originally from Utah, McFarlin reported to the Nimitz in September 2017, according to his service records.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He enlisted in 2000
