{"id":22677,"date":"2019-07-18T17:36:02","date_gmt":"2019-07-18T17:36:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2019\/07\/18\/kearsarge-args-unusual-cruise-is-over\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T18:57:50","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T18:57:50","slug":"kearsarge-args-unusual-cruise-is-over","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2019\/07\/18\/kearsarge-args-unusual-cruise-is-over\/","title":{"rendered":"Kearsarge ARG\u2019s  unusual cruise is over"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NORFOLK \u2014 The Kearsarge Amphibious Ready Group, minus most of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.22ndmeu.marines.mil\/\" target=_blank>22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit<\/a>, returned home on Thursday after an atypical seven-month deployment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Led by the amphibious assault ship <a href=\"https:\/\/www.public.navy.mil\/surflant\/lhd3\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=_blank>Kearsarge<\/a>, the ARG included the landing platform dock <a href=\"https:\/\/www.public.navy.mil\/surflant\/lpd24\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=_blank>Arlington<\/a> and the dock landing ship <a href=\"https:\/\/www.public.navy.mil\/surflant\/lsd43\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=_blank>Fort McHenry<\/a> and carried more than 4,500 sailors and Marines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They left Norfolk on Dec. 17 but their deployment really became three separate cruises. The trio of warships often operated alone, thousands of miles away from each other, overseen by different combatant commanders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They combined to run eight exercises and at least three named operations while also making port visits in 13 different countries across Europe and the Middle East, according to a Wednesday press release by the ARG heralding their arrival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis ARG\u2019s ability to disaggregate forces and operate efficiently and effectively across multiple areas of responsibility during this deployment enabled us to simultaneously fulfill the security requirements of three combatant commanders and that\u2019s no easy task,&#8221; said Capt. Joseph O\u2019Brien in the press release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">O\u2019Brien <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navy.mil\/submit\/display.asp?story_id=109235\" target=_blank>assumed command<\/a> of the Kearsarge ARG on April 12 during the flagship\u2019s port visit to Bahrain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt took a lot of coordination, training, and expertise from the deckplates up the chain of command and I couldn\u2019t be prouder of this team,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2019\/05\/22\/ncis-probing-death-on-amphib\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"180\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/USS-Arlington.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">NCIS probing death on amphib<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">In a written statement emailed to Navy Times, U.S. 6th Fleet spokesman Cmdr. Kyle Raines said that she \u201cwas found unresponsive and pronounced deceased on the ship\u201d on Tuesday.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kearsarge spent most of its time in the U.S. 5th Fleet\u2019s area of operations, sailing more than 37,600 miles on its deployment and launching 1,775 sorties split between the Marine air combat element and the Chargers of the Navy\u2019s Sea Combat Squadron 26.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The missions included flights into Afghanistan from the North Arabian Sea, according to Chief Mass Communications Specialist Peter Lawlor, Kearsarge\u2019s spokesman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Arlington concentrated on the Mediterranean Sea, except for a brief June excursion through the Suez Canal to operate in the Gulf of Aden under 5th Fleet\u2019s control during heightened tensions with Iran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ship also weathered the loss of one of their own, when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2019\/05\/22\/ncis-probing-death-on-amphib\/\" target=\"_blank\">Lt.
