Mark Thompson, who was convicted of having a sexual relationship with a<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">n academy<\/span>\u00a0mid<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">shipman<\/span>\u00a0in 2013.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maj. Mike Pretus will serve as a witness for Thompson&#8217;s prosecution, he\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/local\/naval-academy-teacher-is-removed-amid-widening-sexual-misconduct-scandal\/2016\/04\/25\/2896c85a-0aea-11e6-8ab8-9ad050f76d7d_story.html\">told<\/a>\u00a0The Washington Post on Sunday.\u00a0Pretus, a reported friend of Thompson&#8217;s,\u00a0allegedly had consensual sex with the former midshipman at the center of Thompson&#8217;s case roughly five years ago, the official said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pretus was implicated by a former midshipman but has\u00a0not been charged in the case. He\u00a0did not respond to\u00a0<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">multiple\u00a0<\/span>calls and emails seeking comment Tuesday. The Academy says the school did not know Pretus had allegedly had an affair with a midshipman while he was an officer, in an alleged violation of fraternization rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thompson was convicted of indecent sexual contact with a midshipman and fraternization\u00a0<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">back\u00a0<\/span>in a high-profile 2013 case. He vehemently denied any wrongdoing, and a subsequent\u00a0board of inquiry disregarded the verdict and let him stay in the corps anyway. Thompson&#8217;s three-year battle for his career was the subject of a March feature by The Post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then in March new evidence surfaced in the case, first\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/graphics\/local\/marine\/\">reported<\/a>\u00a0by The\u00a0<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">Washington\u00a0<\/span>Post, and once again Thompson was under investigation for misconduct.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That inquiry led Marine judge advocates to\u00a0<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">Maj. Mike\u00a0<\/span>Pretus, who until last week was teaching history at the academy, according to an\u00a0<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">Navy\u00a0<\/span>official familiar with\u00a0<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">who was not authorized speak on the record about\u00a0<\/span>the case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;The Naval Academy became aware of Pretus&#8217; involvement in the Thompson case when Marine Corps prosecutors working on the new case against Thompson approached the academy,&#8221; the official said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pretus reported to the academy in 2014 with three-year orders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;The Naval Academy had no knowledge of any involvement in this case prior to his receipt of orders here,&#8221; academy spokesman Cmdr. John Schofield told Navy Times on Monday. &#8220;Under no circumstances would the Naval Academy have allowed for assignment on staff and faculty had there been disclosure of the circumstances and details of his involvement in that event.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pretus has a new set of orders starting in early May, Schofield added, after the academic classes have\u00a0concluded.\u00a0<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">Pretus did not respond to phone and email requests for comment.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span class=\"rte rte-comment\"><span class=\"rte rte-comment\">News of Thompson&#8217;s case broke three years ago amid mounting\u00a0<\/span>an increasing\u00a0<\/span>concerns about academy sexual assault. In December 2012, the Pentagon reported that one in seven midshipmen experienced unwanted sexual contact in the prior year.\u00a0Then in January, Thompson&#8217;s case went to a preliminary hearing. Two days after it concluded, Navy Secretary Ray Mabus blasted the academy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We have failed at the Naval\u00a0Academy, in terms of preventing
