{"id":22812,"date":"2015-02-11T21:31:53","date_gmt":"2015-02-11T21:31:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2015\/02\/11\/heart-malady-blamed-for-recruit-s-death-at-boot-camp\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T19:04:40","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T19:04:40","slug":"heart-malady-blamed-for-recruit-s-death-at-boot-camp","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2015\/02\/11\/heart-malady-blamed-for-recruit-s-death-at-boot-camp\/","title":{"rendered":"Heart malady blamed for recruit&#8217;s death at boot camp"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Lake County, Illinois, Coroner&#8217;s Office has determined a heart condition <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">n enlarged heart <\/span>caused the death of Seaman Recruit Andrew Adams, 20, of Sarasota, Florida, in early December.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Adams died Dec. 1 after collapsing in his barracks, just days after finishing the Battle Stations event. He was slated to graduate Dec. 5.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Adams suffered from an enlarged heart due to a condition called dilated cardiomyopathy, an abnormality that can diminish the heart&#8217;s blood pumping capacity, the coroner determined.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lt. Matthew Comer, spokesman for the Navy Service Training Command in Great Lakes, confirmed the cause of death had been determined, but said he could not release the <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">actual <\/span>cause, stating only that it was &#8220;a pre-existing condition.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Navy sources familiar with the findings confirmed Chief Deputy Coroner Orlando Portillo&#8217;s report of an enlarged heart as the official cause of death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Comer said the Navy&#8217;s <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">own <\/span>inquiry into the death found<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">says there is<\/span> no indication that the training at RTC, including the strenuous Battle Stations event, <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">his training at RTC<\/span> contributed to the death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What&#8217;s unclear <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">at the moment <\/span>is if Adams&#8217; physical exam prior to entering the Navy should have discovered the condition prior to his entry into the Navy<span class=\"rte rte-comment\"> or if his strenuous end of training Battlestations event could have contributed to his death<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the American Heart Association, cardiomyopathy is tough to diagnose as often there are no symptoms of the disease until it is too late. It can cause irregular heartbeats, dizziness and fainting. Most often it&#8217;s diagnosed because doctors know to look for it based on a history of the disease in the family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s not known if the malady ran in Adams&#8217; family.
