Steven Combs, to land in the water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eight of the 11 on board managed to escape, averting what could have been an even worse tragedy.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2018\/11\/21\/one-year-later-still-no-answers-in-greyhound-crash-that-killed-three-sailors\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"157\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/greyhound-sailors-2.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">One year later, still no answers in Greyhound crash that killed three sailors<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Thursday marks the one-year anniversary of a C-2A Greyhound crash in the West Pacific that killed Steven Combs, Matthew Chialastri and Bryan Grosso.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Combs, Aviation Boatswain\u2019s Mate (Equipment) Airman Matthew Chialastri and Aviation Ordnanceman Airman Apprentice Bryan Grosso died.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2017\/12\/08\/navy-to-deep-dive-for-lost-c-2a-sailors\/\" target=_blank>special dive team<\/a> deployed from the states to help with the recovery, and the Navy had to enlist a contracted salvage vessel to assist with the recovery from nearly unprecedented depths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While officials said last year that human remains had been recovered but not identified, 7th Fleet spokeswoman Cmdr. Reann Mommsen declined this month to comment on the status of that effort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur thoughts and prayers remain with the families, friends and shipmates of our three fallen Sailors,\u201d she said in an email.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The investigation into the crash remains ongoing as the wreckage is examined, according to Navy
