{"id":22867,"date":"2016-08-23T20:30:58","date_gmt":"2016-08-23T20:30:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2016\/08\/23\/navy-oks-more-lenient-early-retirement-rules-for-officers\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T19:13:40","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T19:13:40","slug":"navy-oks-more-lenient-early-retirement-rules-for-officers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2016\/08\/23\/navy-oks-more-lenient-early-retirement-rules-for-officers\/","title":{"rendered":"Navy OKs more lenient early retirement rules for officers"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Navy personnel officials are tweaking the rules for commanders and captains wanting to retire in their current grade and punch out up to a year early.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since 2008, the Navy has allowed O-5s and O-6s with at least 24-months time-in-grade to request a waiver and retire sooner than the 36 months normally required. In addition, the requests no longer need final approval by the chief of naval personnel. The new rules give community managers more leeway to OK routine early retirement requests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now, only cases where officials feel they can&#8217;t support the early out will the request reach CNP&#8217;s desk for a final determination. <br\/> <br\/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So far this fiscal year, 29 officers from six officer communities have gotten permission punch out under the old rules and officials say these recent tweaks,  <a class=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/snagfilms.s3.amazonaws.com\/d8\/8d\/37c99d624decacfe4cadc75f8034\/cnp-tig-waiver-chart-rev1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Link: http:\/\/snagfilms.s3.amazonaws.com\/d8\/8d\/37c99d624decacfe4cadc75f8034\/cnp-tig-waiver-chart-rev1.pdf\"><b><u>announced in NavAdmin 182\/16, released Aug. 16<\/u><\/b><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Navy officials allow up to 50 takers each year, but insist there&#8217;s no quotas that must be filled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And community health in the officer corps is good enough that a lack of applicants won&#8217;t force the Navy into mandatory cuts or selective early retirement boards, officials say.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Approval of a time-in-grade wavier is based on each community&#8217;s inventory compared against requirements,&#8221;
