{"id":23031,"date":"2018-09-26T18:28:06","date_gmt":"2018-09-26T18:28:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2018\/09\/26\/navy-investigators-join-texas-serial-killer-case\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T19:25:26","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T19:25:26","slug":"navy-investigators-join-texas-serial-killer-case","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2018\/09\/26\/navy-investigators-join-texas-serial-killer-case\/","title":{"rendered":"Navy investigators join Texas serial killer case"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Navy investigators are assisting local law enforcement and reviewing the service record of a sailor-turned-<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbp.gov\/\" target=_blank>Border Patrol <\/a>agent charged this month with murdering four women in Texas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Juan David Ortiz, 35, is accused of fatally shooting four women and injuring a fifth, <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/6888039afae845d7b014f8f38d5d5299\" target=_blank>who managed to escape.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before the alleged killings, Ortiz attained the rating of hospital corpsman 2nd class during an eight-year stint in the Navy from 2001 to 2009, according to service records released to Navy Times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncis.navy.mil\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=_blank>Naval Criminal Investigative Service<\/a> officials remained tight-lipped regarding the specifics of their role in the Ortiz case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNCIS is reviewing his Navy record and supporting local law enforcement in the ongoing investigation,\u201d agency spokesman Ed Buice said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Originally from Texas, Ortiz was stationed as a Navy student at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio between Sept. 21, 2001 and Jan. 18, 2002.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He was assigned to two commands at California\u2019s Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton from Jan. 19, 2002 through April 19, 2002.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He was transferred to the 1st Marine Division Detachment at California\u2019s Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center and was there until April 5, 2005.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ortiz reported to the Navy Element, Defense Medical Readiness Training Institute Detachment at Fort Sam Houston on April 25, 2005 and stayed until April 1, 2008.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He ended his military service at Navy Medical Training Support Center at Fort Sam Houston on May 4, 2009.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2018\/09\/26\/navy-captain-pleads-guilty-at-court-martial\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"197\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/nmcsd.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Navy captain pleads guilty at court-martial<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Capt. Paul C. believe that he aimed to \u201ccommit suicide by cop\u201d by holding a cellphone to make it look like a weapon but instead was arrested Sept. 15 in Laredo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Charges against Ortiz include four murder counts, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and unlawful restraint, according to the Webb County jail\u2019s
