ANNAPOLIS, Md.\u00a0\u2014 When\u00a0Air\u00a0Force\u00a0looks back on its game against\u00a0Navy, the Falcons will lament numerous mistakes and missed opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Those errors allowed the Midshipmen to gain a measure of revenge from last season’s loss. It also put\u00a0Navy\u00a0in the driver’s seat to recapture the Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Navy\u00a0quarterback Keenan Reynolds ran for 117 of his 183 yards in the first half, and the Midshipmen cruised to a 33-11 victory over\u00a0Air\u00a0Force\u00a0on Saturday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It was\u00a0Navy’s\u00a0largest margin of victory in the series since 1978.\u00a0Air\u00a0Force\u00a0(2-2) committed a season-high four turnovers, all in\u00a0Navy\u00a0territory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“One team handled the ball exceptionally well and one team did not,”\u00a0Air\u00a0Force\u00a0coach Troy Calhoun said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Karson Roberts, 5 for 12 for 73 yards with an interception, ran for his team’s lone touchdown in the fourth quarter. Garrett Brown did manage to extend his career-high streak for receptions to 22 games, dating to 2013.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“We know we can’t get too high or too low,” Brown said. “That’s how one loss leads to another. So\u00a0the best thing we can do is come together, and on Monday come back and work hard.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n
Reynolds completed 4 of 10 passes for 117 yards with a touchdown on a wet, windy day. Chris Swain had a pair of short-yardage scores for the Midshipmen (4-0).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Now in its 44th year, the Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy is presented annually to the winner of the football games among the three major service academies \u2014\u00a0Army,\u00a0Navy\u00a0and\u00a0Air\u00a0Force. The Falcons won the trophy last season after beating\u00a0Navy\u00a030-21 and\u00a0Army\u00a023-6.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Quite frankly, no one should feel good about today’s game,” Calhoun said. “No player should. No coach should.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Reynolds ran for 54 yards on\u00a0Navy’s\u00a0first play from scrimmage to set up the first score. Swain finished the drive with a 2-yard run. The Midshipmen defense came up big on\u00a0Air\u00a0Force’s\u00a0ensuing possession, stuffing fullback Shayne Davern on fourth-and-goal from the 1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
After\u00a0Navy’s\u00a0Kwazel Bertrand recovered a fumble by Roberts, the Midshipmen went 64 yards to pull ahead 14-0 with 14:47 left in the second quarter. This time, Reynolds threw a 27-yard pass to Thomas Wilson, who fought off two defenders just inside the end zone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Falcons got into the\u00a0Navy\u00a0territory again midway through the second quarter, but Brendon Clements intercepted a high pass by Roberts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“We just have to keep the ball off the ground,” Roberts said. “It was wet out there, but that really wasn’t an issue. I think as a team we didn’t play as well as we should have.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Reynolds continued to be the difference-maker and another 67-yard run gave the Midshipmen the ball at the 1 late in the second quarter. Three plays later, Demond Brown scored on a sweep and\u00a0Navy\u00a0led 21-0 at the break.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Navy\u00a0carried that momentum into the second half. On the opening drive, the Midshipmen went 75 yards on 12 plays and boosted the lead to 27-0 on a 1-yard run by Swain. From there, though,\u00a0Navy’s\u00a0offense stalled, which gave\u00a0Air\u00a0Force\u00a0a chance to get back into the game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Falcons finally got on the board with a 39-yard field goal by Drew Oehrle with 4:14 left in the third quarter. Air Force pulled to within 27-11 on a 1-yard run and 2-point conversion by Roberts with 13:46 remaining in the game. It was the first rushing touchdown allowed by Navy this season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Navy rebounded with a pair of field goals by Austin Grebe from 37 and 24 yards to put the game away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“I’m proud of our guys,” Ken Niumatalolo,\u00a0Navy’s\u00a0coach,\u00a0said. “They worked hard for this all year. Last year was one of the most painful losses I have been a part of in athletics.
