The aircraft carrier Dwight. D. Eisenhower<\/a> and its 4,600 sailors returned to Norfolk Sunday after wrapping up a \u201cdouble-pump\u201d deployment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Eisenhower<\/a> got underway for deployment in February 2021 \u2014 after having just returned from their previous deployment in August 2020. Because of the Eisenhower carrier strike group\u2019s actions and contributions during this deployment, Acting Secretary of the Navy Thomas Harker has awarded the group with the Navy Unit Commendation award.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI am most proud that we had all these reasons why we may not have been successful,\u201d Rear Adm. Scott Robertson, Carrier Strike Group 2 commander, told reporters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Specifically, Robertson cited the double-pump deployment, COVID-19, and the six-week composite unit training exercise the strike group completed just before officially deploying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe fact that this team just absolutely rallied and went out and truly showed their grit, their toughness and their commitment to the Navy and our nation is what I\u2019m most proud of,\u201d Robertson said. \u201cAnd we went out and we really shined, we really demonstrated and met all of our deployment objectives really.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t
