{"id":23530,"date":"2019-11-17T17:53:49","date_gmt":"2019-11-17T17:53:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2019\/11\/17\/china-aircraft-carrier-fleet-passes-near-rival-taiwan\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T19:09:13","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T19:09:13","slug":"china-aircraft-carrier-fleet-passes-near-rival-taiwan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/flashpoints\/2019\/11\/17\/china-aircraft-carrier-fleet-passes-near-rival-taiwan\/","title":{"rendered":"China aircraft carrier fleet passes near rival Taiwan; says American and Japanese ships followed"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">TAIPEI, Taiwan \u2014 A Chinese aircraft carrier fleet passed near Taiwan on Sunday, prompting the self-governing island to scramble ships and jets to monitor the situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Taiwan\u2019s defense ministry said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2019\/05\/02\/pentagon-flattop-to-join-chinese-fleet-this-year\/\" target=_blank>the southbound Chinese fleet <\/a>passed into the Taiwan Strait but stayed on China\u2019s side of the waterway that separates the island from China.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ministry said Taiwan scrambled ships and jets to monitor the fleet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">U.S. and Japanese ships were also following the Chinese fleet, the ministry said without giving details.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">China has passed aircraft carriers into the strait since Taiwan President Tsai lng-wen took office in 2016. China has the world\u2019s third-largest armed forces compared to Taiwan at No. 22, as ranked by the <a href=\"http:\/\/globalfirepower.com\/\" target=_blank>GlobalFirePower.com<\/a> database.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Taiwan Strait is a heavily trafficked waterway, but China pays special attention to activity there by foreign navies. A U.S. cruiser passed through the Taiwan Strait on Nov. 12, the U.S. Navy said in a tweet. That passage was the ninth so far this year for the United States, Taiwan\u2019s government-run Central News Agency reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">China has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2019\/05\/23\/beijing-protests-american-warships-sailing-through-the-taiwan-strait-again\/\" target=\"_blank\">condemned previous U.S. voyages<\/a> in the Taiwan Strait as meddling in the China-Taiwan issue. The second carrier is probably aimed to deterring U.S. \u201cintervention\u201d, Yang said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The presidential office in Taipei sent a statement Sunday asking China to \u201ccherish\u201d \u201cpeace and stability\u201d with Taiwan and elsewhere in the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The fleet seen Sunday was escorting China\u2019s first entirely home-built aircraft carrier, the ministry statement said. It had sailed from a shipyard in northern China where it was being constructed.
