plane multiple times during a three-hour span Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The incident occurred in international airspace over the Mediterranean Sea, with the Russian Sukhoi SU-35 fighter making three passes at a P-8A Poseidon patrol plane, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c6f.navy.mil\/Media\/News\/Article\/1866330\/russian-intercept-over-mediterranean-sea\/\" target=_blank>Navy statement issued Tuesday<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While 6th Fleet officials deemed two of the three passes safe under international rules for aerial intercepts, the second pass by the Russian \u201cFlanker-E\u201d jet veered directly in front of the American aircraft, creating \u201cwake turbulence\u201d that unlawfully endangered the aircrew.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lasting 175 minutes, Tuesday\u2019s encounter became the latest in a series of incidents involving Russian forces over the past several years, highlighting growing tensions between the rival powers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis interaction was irresponsible,\u201d the 6th Fleet statement said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe expect them to behave within international standards set to ensure safety and to prevent incidents\u201d because \u201cunsafe actions\u200e increase the risk of miscalculation and potential for midair collisions,&#8221; it added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 6th Fleet statement indicated that the patrol aircraft was operating in accordance with the <a href=\"https:\/\/2009-2017.state.gov\/t\/isn\/4791.htm\" target=_blank>1972 Agreement for the Prevention of Incidents On and Over the High Seas<\/a> and the U.S. crew never tried to provoke the Russian jet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Navy Times questions about where in the Mediterranean Sea the incident occurred and which squadron was involved have not been intercepts involving U.S. Navy recon planes and Russian fighter jets.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During a 25-minute encounter on Nov. 5, a Sukhoi Su-27 \u201cFlanker\u201d fighter buzzed a Navy EP-3E Aeries II reconnaissance aircraft flying in international airspace over the Black Sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That Russian jet also made \u201ca high speed pass directly in front\u201c of the Aeries \u201cputting at risk the pilots and crew,\u201d a Pentagon spokesman told Navy Times at the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Similar incidents involving Russian fighters and U.S. patrol planes occurred <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2018\/01\/29\/russian-jets-fly-within-five-feet-of-navy-plane-over-black-sea\/\" target=\"_blank\">in early 2018<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2017\/11\/28\/russian-jet-buzzes-navy-aircraft-causing-violent-turbulence\/\" target=\"_blank\">late 2017. <\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Russian aggression in the air follows Moscow\u2019s 2014 annexation of Ukraine\u2019s Crimean Peninsula, a move that soured relations with both the United States and NATO
