Truman<\/a> Carrier Strike Group\u2019s historic deployment came to a close shortly before noon on Sunday, when the flattop and its guided-missile escorts returned here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was a cold day, alternating between rain and sunshine, but throngs of family members flocked to the piers to greet nearly 6,500 sailors from the Truman, the cruiser <a href=\"https:\/\/www.public.navy.mil\/surflant\/cg60\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=_blank>Normandy<\/a> and destroyers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.public.navy.mil\/surflant\/ddg51\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=_blank>Arleigh Burke<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.public.navy.mil\/surflant\/ddg98\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=_blank>Forrest Sherman<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.public.navy.mil\/airfor\/cvw1\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=_blank>Carrier Air Wing 1\u2019<\/a>s squadrons had their homecoming on Friday and Saturday as their aircraft departed for shore, some bound for Naval Air Station Oceana in Virginia Beach while others were slated to continue on to Jacksonville, Florida; Whidbey Island, Washington; and Lemoore, California.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou should be justifiably proud of a historic deployment,\u201d said Fleet Forces Command\u2019s Adm. Christopher Grady over the Truman\u2019s 1MC announcing system shortly after boarding the carrier on Sunday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt was lots of hard work, with over 200 days underway while steaming over 70,000 nautical miles and flying over 12,000 sorties. You should be proud of yourselves. And she&#039;s not done yet.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sunday ended what admirals on the Norfolk pier and inside the Pentagon agree was a successful implementation of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/naval\/2018\/07\/16\/jim-mattis-dynamic-force-employment-just-got-real-for-the-us-navy\/\">Dynamic Force Employment <\/a>plan created by Defense Secretary Jim Mattis to shake up the Navy\u2019s carrier strike group deployment schedules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Seven-month carrier tours had become routine but the Truman mixed that up. The strike group departed Norfolk on April 11, just a year and nine months after returning from a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2016\/07\/13\/after-smashing-isis-carrier-truman-returns-home-to-virginia\">record-setting deployment<\/a> bombing the Islamic State in the Middle East.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Truman and its escorts make a surprise return to to Virginia <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2018\/07\/18\/why-will-the-navy-bring-home-the-truman-after-only-three-months-at-sea\/\">on July 21<\/a> for what officials cautioned families was an \u201cworking port visit,\u201d not a homecoming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They left again on Aug. 28 for a rendezvous in the Atlantic with sister carrier Abraham Lincoln before continuing on to NATO\u2019s massive Trident Juncture exercises in the Norwegian Sea, a show of force that reminded Russia that America and its allies can put troops ashore and munitions on target if necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They later sailed across the Mediterranean Sea and then back across the Atlantic Ocean to Virginia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Truman\u2019s nontraditional tour was designed to both assure allies and warn potential enemies that the United States can show up suddenly with dominant firepower to defend our interests and alliances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe most unique aspect of this deployment was the broad range of places we went,\u201d said Rear Adm. Gene Black, the strike group\u2019s commander.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFrom the East Med to the Arctic Circle to operating inside a Norwegian fjord. And then we can home in the middle of all that for five weeks and had a working port visit. Dienna<\/a>, the commanding officer of the Truman, said the highlight of the cruise\u2019s second act was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2018\/10\/19\/the-navy-sends-a-carrier-back-to-russias-arctic-haunts\/\" target=_blank>crossing the Arctic Circle<\/a>. That netted the crews on the carrier and its escorts Arctic Service Medals and certificates pronouncing them members of the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/navycrow.com\/what-in-the-blue-hell-is-a-bluenose\/\" target=_blank>Order of the Blue Nose<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe most significant part of the second phase of our deployment was to demonstrate our capacity to operate in areas where we have not in the last 30 years, up north in the Arctic Circle in a demanding environment,&#8221; Dienna said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dienna said that his warship operated flawlessly in the demanding environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Nimitz-class aircraft carrier was designed during the Cold War to operate in these latitudes, in that cold environment,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt is extremely demanding on the people,\u201d Dienna said. &#8220;We operated in high seas and cold temperatures and in really high winds. You can imagine how physically demanding that is on the flight deck crews and the squadron maintainers who operate 10, 12, 14 hours a day in that environment. But when they return, their warship becomes the \u201cready carrier\u201d on the East Coast, relieving the George H.W.
