WASHINGTON \u2014 Kevin Howard, a Marine Corps veteran, and Taylor Hudson, an American citizen and veteran of the French Foreign Legion, allegedly were detained by U.S.-backed Syrian fighters after U.S. Special Forces refused to help them in their attempt to return home. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The two Americans were volunteers fighting with the Syriac Military Council, or MFS, under the larger umbrella group that is the Syrian Democratic Forces, or SDF. The People\u2019s Protection Units, or YPG, is a larger Kurdish-dominated faction within the SDF.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe were taken by a YPG commander to an American SF [Special Forces] soldier,\u201d who Hudson described as extremely rude and unhelpful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWhen Kevin said he\u2019s a former Marine and our lives are potentially in danger, he said, \u2018Are you serious?\u2019 Gave us a look like we were terribly inconveniencing him,\u201d Hudson said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Hudson and Howard were then asked to tell their story to a plain clothes individual at the U.S. garrison who claimed he was with the Army, Hudson said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to Hudson, following their conversation at the garrison, \u201cwe got into the car with two big SF guys, they drove us right out the front gate, kicked us out, got up in our faces and said, \u2018You know the way you came in? That\u2019s how you\u2019re getting out, start walking.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Howard then pleaded with the individual, explaining they had no money and their lives were potentially in danger, Hudson said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cNot my problem, you chose to come here, get the f— out of here,\u201d the soldier said to the volunteers, according to Hudson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe hitchhiked back to Tel Tamar and then the next day we were detained,\u201d Hudson said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Hudson went on to describe being detained by the MFS in Hassakeh, Syria, until he agreed to sign a statement releasing himself from the MFS\u2019s command.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Howard was sent to a separate location in Derik, Syria, allegedly because of his refusal to comply with the MFS\u2019s statement, which he has since signed, according to Hudson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Hudson confirmed earlier reports that the U.S. State Department had told the two Americans to seek assistance from a U.S. military base in Syria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
MFS released a statement indicative of their cooperation in assisting the Americans, which Hudson immediately refuted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cOur two volunteer fighters, informed MFS General Command their will to stop fighting and leave for their respective homeland \u2026 we are working with them to assist them to leave Syria and later to join their country,\u201d the statement reads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThey have released an official statement saying that they\u2019re helping both of us get home,\u201d Hudson said in a telephone interview Thursday. \u201cThis is an absolute lie. They have no authority in Iraq and are just going to dump him at the border.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Hudson also addressed a Military Times report that YPG officials had charged the two for selling weapons to ISIS.
<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe commander of the YPG foreign volunteers, \u00c7anser, arrested us and charged us with treason for joining MFS despite them being under the same command of SDF. He said we were joining a faction that was \u2018worse than ISIS,\u2019\u201d Hudson explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Hudson and Howard both originally volunteered to fight with the YPG until switching to the MFS after the liberation of Tabaq city, Hudson said. The two Americans were simply drained after running a makeshift field hospital in Tabqa, Syria, and wanted to serve with a front-line unit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The last word Military Times received from Hudson is that Howard has yet to be released by the MFS and is still in Derik, Syria. The two Americans are attempting to rendezvous to leave Syria together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Hudson said he is worried the MFS will dump Howard at the Iraqi border with no phone, money or contacts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
