{"id":25417,"date":"2019-02-21T18:14:16","date_gmt":"2019-02-21T18:14:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2019\/02\/21\/dod-announces-first-bases-to-get-water-contamination-review\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T06:03:13","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T06:03:13","slug":"dod-announces-first-bases-to-get-water-contamination-review","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2019\/02\/21\/dod-announces-first-bases-to-get-water-contamination-review\/","title":{"rendered":"Feds formally launch investigation of carcinogens on military bases"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The U.S. government is moving forward on a review of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2018\/06\/08\/dod-explains-whats-being-done-about-water-contamination-on-bases\/\" target=\"_blank\">water contamination<\/a> at military bases, a study that may one day help answer a heartbreaking question: Did <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2018\/05\/20\/more-reasons-to-be-worried-about-cancer-causing-chemicals-on-military-bases\/\" target=\"_blank\">exposure to DoD chemicals<\/a> give troops or their family members cancer?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The study, announced by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, will specifically look at the levels of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, or PFAS, in people in the affected communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2018\/04\/26\/dod-126-bases-report-water-contaminants-harmful-to-infant-development-tied-to-cancers\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/firefighting-foam.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">DoD: At least 126 bases report water contaminants linked to cancer, birth defects<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The water at or around 126 military installations contains potentially harmful levels of perfluorinated compounds, which have been linked to cancers and developmental delays for fetuses and infants.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">PFAS are chemical compounds that were used in fire fighting foam on military bases and are also found in everyday household products. PFAS have been tied to cancers and developmental delays for fetuses and infants. The Pentagon released a <a href=\"https:\/\/partner-mco-archive.s3.amazonaws.com\/client_files\/1524589484.pdf\" target=_blank>review<\/a> last year that found that scores of military installations had contaminated groundwater and well water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This first study aims to set a baseline and \u201cprovide information to communities about levels of PFAS in their bodies.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2018\/08\/13\/white-house-called-toxins-contamination-pr-nightmare\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"157\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP18222604813114.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">White House called toxins contamination \u2018PR nightmare\u2019<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">EPA testing from 2013 to 2015 found significant amounts of PFAS in public water supplies in 33 U.S. states. The finding helped move PFAS up as a national priority.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That initial review will go through 2020 and be used support a follow-on, nationwide study \u201cthat will look at the relationship between PFAS exposure and health outcomes,\u201d the agencies said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A total of 10 locations will make up the initial review. The first two, comprising Bucks and Montgomery counties in Pennsylvania and Westhampton, N.Y., are already underway, due to state grants. The Pennsylvania sites include Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base Willow Grove and Naval Air Warfare Center Warminster. The New York site includes the Francis S. Gabreski Air National Guard Base.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On top of those two, the following eight communities will now be added:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Berkeley County (W. Va.) near Shepherd Field Air National Guard Base<\/li><li>El Paso County (Colo.) near Peterson Air Force Base<\/li><li>Fairbanks North Star Borough (Alaska) near Eielson Air Force Base<\/li><li>Hampden County (Mass.) near Barnes Air National Guard Base<\/li><li>Lubbock County (Texas) near Reese Technology Center<\/li><li>Orange County (N.Y.) near Stewart Air National Guard Base<\/li><li>New Castle County (Del.) near New Castle Air National Guard Base<\/li><li>Spokane County (Wash.) near Fairchild Air Force Base<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe assessments will generate information about exposure to PFAS in affected communities and will extend beyond the communities identified, as the lessons learned can also be applied to communities facing similar PFAS drinking water exposures. This will serve as a foundation for future studies evaluating the impact of PFAS exposure on human health,\u201d said ATSDR director Patrick Breysse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The study participants will be randomly selected and will have their PFAS levels checked through blood and urine samples.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link
