Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Fla., in a statement accompanying the budget proposal release. \u201cIt\u2019s a blueprint to make our VA and military stronger and more responsive to all those who proudly protect America, now and in the past.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2021\/04\/09\/va-to-see-another-big-spending-boost-under-bidens-first-budget-plan\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/50935602796_8450d0a5ba_o.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">VA to see another big spending boost under Biden\u2019s first budget plan<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Total department spending is expected to top more than $250 billion in fiscal 2022.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The budget draft also includes $10.9 billion for military construction projects next fiscal year, about $3 billion above current year levels and $1 billion more than the president\u2019s request.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">House appropriators are expected to advance the plan to the full chamber next week, with a possible vote on the package in late July. But it will likely still be months before a final budget agreement is reached on VA and military construction spending with Senate lawmakers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The latest plan calls for $97.6 billion for veterans medical care spending. Of that, $778.5 million would be earmarked for gender-specific care for women veterans ($73 million more than what the White House requested), $902 million for medical and prosthetic research ($20 million more) and $84 million for \u201cwhole health\u201d initiatives ($10 million more).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lawmakers largely matched other White House program priorities for the department, including $13.2 billion in mental health care spending, $2.2 billion for homeless assistance programs, $621 million for opioid abuse prevention efforts, and $307 million for rural health initiatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2021\/06\/23\/va-telehealth-options-here-to-stay-secretary-vows\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"187\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/5622977.jpg_3dc886.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">VA telehealth options here to stay, secretary vows<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Use of online medical appointments among VA patients skyrocketed during the pandemic.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur veterans have risked their lives to keep our nation safe,\u201d Appropriations Committee Chair Rosa DeLauro, D-Conn., said in a statement on the draft budget plan. \u201cWhether they are still fighting or returning home, it is our duty to make sure these brave men and women and their families have the support and the care they need.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While numerous federal agencies have seen flat or reduced spending in recent years, the Department of Veterans Affairs has seen significant annual growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In fiscal 2001, the VA budget totaled about $45 billion. By fiscal 2011, it was about $125 billion, almost triple that total.
