{"id":26659,"date":"2017-12-08T18:43:38","date_gmt":"2017-12-08T18:43:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2017\/12\/08\/sailor-staged-racist-vandalism-navy-says\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T19:18:28","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T19:18:28","slug":"sailor-staged-racist-vandalism-navy-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2017\/12\/08\/sailor-staged-racist-vandalism-navy-says\/","title":{"rendered":"Sailor staged racist vandalism, Navy says"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A sailor who claimed someone scrawled racial slurs on his bed aboard an aircraft carrier \u2014sparking a viral Facebook post in the process \u2014 staged the incident himself, the Navy said Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Marquie Little, a 27-year-old African American seaman, posted photos to Facebook on Nov. 15 under an alias that showed his rack on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2017\/01\/22\/carrier-george-h-w-bush-strike-group-departs-norfolk-for-seven-month-deployment\/\" title=\"\">carrier George H.W. Bush<\/a> covered in trash and racial slurs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI proudly serve the Navy and this is what I\u2019m receiving in return,\u201d he wrote in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/marquie.little\/posts\/1514327828644821\" title=\"\" class=\"selected-link\">post<\/a>.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s not my first time being called a word such as that,\u201d the aviation boatswain\u2019s mate airman said in a phone interview later that month. \u201cIt puzzled me as to who would do it and why they would do it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/news\/your-air-force\/2017\/11\/08\/air-force-academy-cadet-wrote-racial-slur-outside-his-own-dorm-room\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Air-Force-Academy-cadets-in-front-of-chapel-medium.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Air Force Academy cadet wrote racial slur outside his own dorm room<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">That cadet candidate is no longer a student at the academy&#039;s prep school.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But on Friday Cmdr. Dave Hecht, a spokesman for Naval Air Force Atlantic, said \u201ca thorough investigation\u201d conducted with the Naval Criminal Investigative Service found inconsistencies in the sailor\u2019s account.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA NCIS-supported command investigation following claims of racially-motivated vandalism aboard the (carrier) has determined that the alleged victim staged the incident himself,\u201d Hecht said in an email.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe United States Navy does not tolerate racial discrimination of any form and the well-being of our Sailors is our top priority,\u201d Hecht said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hecht declined to identify the sailor because he was not charged with a crime, but said the sailor had \u201creceived appropriate administrative actions and additional counseling and training.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe will remain a member of the crew and continue to perform his military duties,\u201d Hecht said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"1047\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/fb-post.png.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-55496\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/fb-post.png.png 1200w, class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Little denied staging the racist vandalism, and said Friday that NCIS had not done a proper investigation, but did not elaborate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAnd now I\u2019m to be here looking like a bad guy for attention,\u201d Little wrote in a text message. \u201cI have nothing to gain from doing such an incident but I have everything to lose.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hecht said that, while the Navy had disproven the sailor\u2019s claims, it used the incident to provide additional crew training and reemphasize that vandalism and racism would not be tolerated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last month, after the vandalism and the Facebook post, Little told Navy Times he feared for his safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMaybe the guy or guys that vandalized my rack would see me out in town,\u201d he said. \u201cI constantly have to look who\u2019s giving me the side eye.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hecht said the carrier\u2019s command used the incident as an opportunity to reiterate that the command \u201chas an open door policy for reporting incidents of misconduct.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The sailor\u2019s Facebook post had drawn nearly 20,500 shares as of Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Navy incident follows another one this fall at the Air Force Academy preparatory school, where racial slurs were found written on the dorm message boards of five black cadet candidates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Air Force later said that one of those five black cadet candidates had admitted to writing the
