Ford, operating at sea off Norfolk, Virginia, got a big surprise this morning when an announced training session turned into a special showing of \u201cStar Wars: The Last Jedi.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sailors were told to assemble for training at 8:30 a.m. in the hanger bay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rumors were circulating about the cause of the formation, but officials say no one was prepared for what was about to happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As the Ford\u2019s commanding officer, Capt. Capt. Rick McCormack, greeted the crew, he acknowledged the speculation, and without giving anything away, introduced Ken Caldwell, a senior member of Disney Studios.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Caldwell spoke to the estimated thousand sailors about the latest Star Wars movie release, but only indicated that he\u2019d brought along a special remastered copy of Mary Poppins to show.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After a short delay, he spilled the beans on why he showed up on the ship that, at the time, sat nearly 80 miles out at sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is a movie about heroes, but this is just a movie,\u201d he told the crew. \u201cWhen it comes to heroes, you are the real heroes and we appreciate your your service.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Caldwell then spent a few minutes handing out Star Wars memorabilia to crew members before they rolled the film, projecting it on one of the Ford\u2019s massive sets of hanger bay doors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1799\" height=\"2683\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Ford_Jedi2.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-55699\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Ford_Jedi2.jpg.jpg 1799w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Ford_Jedi2.jpg.jpg?resize=201,300 201w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Ford_Jedi2.jpg.jpg?resize=768,1145 768w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Ford_Jedi2.jpg.jpg?resize=687,1024 687w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Ford_Jedi2.jpg.jpg?resize=1030,1536 1030w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Ford_Jedi2.jpg.jpg?resize=1373,2048 1373w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1799px) 100vw, 1799px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Aboard the USS Gerald R. This is awesome,\u201d said Aviation Boatswain\u2019s Mate (Fuels) Ashley Ortwig. \u201cI had no idea and I\u2019m such a Star Wars fan. I even have an entire Star Wars [tattoo] sleeve, I love Star Wars.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Command Master Chief (SW\/AW) Laura Nunley said that the much-anticipated movie was definitely on the minds of sailors before the screening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey kept asking us whether we could pull in so they could see the opening of this movie,\u201d she said. \u201cWe kept telling them we\u2019re not going to pull in early but they had no idea that this could be pulled off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe opportunity to bring something like this to the sailors and watch their faces light up was pretty amazing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The at-sea premiere of the movie was the brain child of the ship\u2019s public affairs officer, Lt. Cmdr. Katie Cerezo, who, once receiving approval from Ford\u2019s chain of command, enlisted the help of Naval Forces Atlantic to pull it off, according to Cmdr. Dave Hecht, AirLant spokesman who was on board for the screening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hecht said that once presented with the idea, Disney officials didn\u2019t hesitate, and burned a specially encrypted DVD for Caldwell, who then flew to Norfolk.
