{"id":27387,"date":"2019-11-13T23:42:31","date_gmt":"2019-11-13T23:42:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2019\/11\/13\/bridge-rededicated-to-honor-navy-submariner-killed-at-sea\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T19:28:49","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T19:28:49","slug":"bridge-rededicated-to-honor-navy-submariner-killed-at-sea","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2019\/11\/13\/bridge-rededicated-to-honor-navy-submariner-killed-at-sea\/","title":{"rendered":"Bridge rededicated to honor Navy submariner killed at sea"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">PORTSMOUTH, N.H. \u2014 A New Hampshire bridge has been replaced and rededicated to a World War II submarine crew member who died when the vessel sank in 1944.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">George Laderbush, of Portsmouth, was a torpedoman\u2019s mate on board the Flier when it sank after striking a Japanese mine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"http:\/\/seascoastonline.com\/\" target=_blank>Seascoastonline.com<\/a> reports the Woodbury Avenue bridge over the Route 1 Bypass in Portsmouth was originally dedicated to Laderbush when it was built in 1949. But the plaque wasn\u2019t in a prominent location.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The bridge was closed two years ago and was replaced. The plaque was removed and refurbished and is being featured in a more visible area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Laderbush\u2019s niece and nephew, Marga Coulp and George Laderbush, were guests of honor at the Veterans Day bridge rededication ceremony.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/home\/left-column\/2019\/10\/01\/dead-for-decades-the-torpedomans-mate-rating-is-born-again\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"215\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Submarine.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Dead for decades, the torpedoman\u2019s mate rating is born again<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">It had been absorbed into the machinist\u2019s mate rate in 1995.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Navy Times editor\u2019s note: <\/b>At 2200 on an overcast 13 August 1944, Torpedoman\u2019s Mate 2nd Class Laderbush was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.history.navy.mil\/content\/history\/nhhc\/research\/library\/online-reading-room\/title-list-alphabetically\/u\/united-states-submarine-losses\/flier-ss-250.html\" target=\"_blank\">on board the Flier (SS-250)<\/a>, which had passed through the Sulu Sea and was making 15 knots across the Balabac Strait south of Palawan during its second war patrol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then an explosion erupted forward on the starboard side of the boat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Survivors later recalled seawater, oil and debris rising in the bridge, the terrible sound of flooding and then the screams of men below. It took less than 30 seconds for Flier to sink.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The commanding officer, Cmdr. J.D. Crowley, later concluded that his sub struck a mine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 14 crew members fortunate enough to escape the boat faced a dilemma. If they swam to Comiran Island, they risked capture by the Japanese. So they splashed toward a line of coral reefs to the northwest, relying on flashes of lightning and an early morning moonrise to guide their way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Six sailors couldn\u2019t keep up and were never seen again. Those who made it to Mantangule Island, as a group or alone, survived. Villagers gave them food and water and the crew lashed bamboo driftwood together into a raft and set off for Palawan and its U.S. Army Coast Watcher Unit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The soldiers there let them radio for evacuation by submarine. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.history.navy.mil\/research\/histories\/ship-histories\/danfs\/r\/redfin.html\">Redfin<\/a> retrieved them from a pair of small boats early on 31 August 1944.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The story about Laderbush\u2019s fate fell victim to wartime secrecy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Navy wanted to protect the survivors so they could be rescued. Press releases only mentioned that Flier had seen \u201crecent action&#8221; and the dead crew members were listed as \u201cmissing in action.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They were officially declared dead on Jan. 19, 1946, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.library.unh.edu\/find\/archives\/collections\/george-laderbush-papers-1931-2010\" target=_blank>according to the University of New Hampshire<\/a>, which became a repository for Laderbush\u2019s records.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The folder includes the last letter George wrote home before Flier went on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oneternalpatrol.com\/\" target=_blank>eternal patrol<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fair winds and following seas, TM2
