ANCHORAGE, Alaska \u2014 Alaska\u2019s governor has proposed that the U.S. Department of Energy expand the nation\u2019s emergency supply of crude oil by adding a storage site at a former Alaska naval base.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Republican Gov. Mike Dunleavy sent a letter Oct. 31 suggesting an oil depot on Adak Island, The Anchorage Daily News reported<\/a> Sunday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A storage facility on the island could reduce the risk of supply disruptions for America’s Asian allies and West Coast markets, Dunleavy said in the letter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Energy Department\u2019s Office of Strategic Petroleum Reserves<\/a> is studying locations for future storage sites, creating an \u201cexcellent opportunity\u201d to consider sites in the western U.S., Dunleavy wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The proposed Adak project would cut maritime delivery times to the West Coast and to our strategic Asian partners from weeks to days,” the governor wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Adak Island is the nation\u2019s westernmost community, located 1,200 miles (1,931 kilometers) from Anchorage in the Aleutian Chain. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The former Naval Air Facility Adak closed in 1997.<\/p>\n\n\n\t
