Prosecutors had appealed and asked Hazel to review the magistrate\u2019s order. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">U.S. Magistrate Judge Charles Day decided last Tuesday that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2019\/05\/07\/release-terms-set-for-coast-guard-officer-called-terrorist\/\" target=_blank>Hasson could be released<\/a> from custody and supervised by relatives in Virginia. But Day didn\u2019t order Hasson\u2019s immediate release. Instead, he gave prosecutors time to appeal. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hazel said \u201creasonable judges can disagree\u201d in a case like this. And in this instance, Hazel said he can\u2019t leave it to Hasson\u2019s relatives to serve as his custodians and ensure the public\u2019s safety. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSo I will put that job in the hands of the U.S. Marshals (Service),\u201d the judge added. <\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2019\/04\/24\/coast-guard-officer-accused-of-making-hit-list-targeted-supreme-court-justices-feds-say\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/hasson-guns.png.png?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Coast Guard officer accused of making hit list targeted Supreme Court justices, feds say<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">A Coast Guard lieutenant accused of stockpiling guns and compiling a hit list of prominent Democrats and network TV journalists looked at other targets: two Supreme Court justices and two executives of social media companies, according to federal prosecutors.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Prosecutors have called Hasson a domestic terrorist intent on carrying out a killing spree, but they haven\u2019t filed any terrorism-related charges against him since his Feb. 15 arrest. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Assistant U.S. Attorney Thomas Windom said the government has no doubt that Hasson\u2019s arrest prevented bloodshed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNothing is more serious than murder. And, plain and simple, that\u2019s what the defendant was going to do,\u201d Windom told Hazel. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hasson can appeal Hazel\u2019s decision. His attorney, assistant public defender Liz Oyer, declined to comment after the hearing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Day\u2019s order called for releasing Hasson to the custody of in-laws at a home in Virginia, with 24-hour monitoring by global positioning system equipment. His wife moved out of their Silver Spring, Maryland, apartment after his arrest and has been staying with her mother in Virginia. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2019\/02\/28\/coast-guard-officer-indicted-on-gun-and-drug-charges\/\" target=_blank>Hasson has pleaded not guilty<\/a> to charges of unlawful possession of firearm silencers, possession of firearm by unlawful user or addict of a controlled substance, and illegal possession of tramadol, an opioid painkiller. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Oyer has said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2019\/04\/17\/attorney-seeks-coast-guardsmans-release-since-he-isnt-facing-terrorism-charges\/\" target=\"_blank\">prosecutors haven\u2019t filed terrorism-related charges<\/a> against Hasson because they haven\u2019t found any evidence to back up those allegations. She accused prosecutors of seeking to punish Hasson for \u201cprivate thoughts\u201d that he never shared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey\u2019re asking the court to go with a gut feeling,\u201d she told Hazel. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But prosecutors believe Hasson planned to act on his thoughts, just as other far-right extremists wrote manifestos before killing 77 people in a 2011 bomb-and-shooting rampage in Norway and launching a deadly attack on New Zealand mosques in March. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is a case study in the adage, \u2018When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time.\u2019 Through years of research and purchases, the defendant made plain his intentions, though he kept them quiet so as not to attract attention,\u201d Windom wrote in a court filing Friday. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hazel said prosecutors presented credible evidence that Hasson took \u201cconcrete steps\u201d to fulfill a desire to commit violent acts. The judge also noted that prosecutors said they couldn\u2019t account for two weapons that Hasson owned. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat\u2019s something that concerns the court,\u201d Hazel said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hasson is a self-described white nationalist who espoused extremist views for years and \u201cintends to murder innocent civilians on a scale rarely seen in this country,\u201d Windom wrote in a previous court filing. Hasson also drafted an email in which he said he was \u201cdreaming of a way to kill almost every last person on earth,\u201d Windom said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Prosecutors have said Hasson created what appeared to be a computer-spreadsheet hit list that included Democratic presidential hopefuls Sens. Kirsten Gillibrand, Elizabeth Warren, Cory Booker and Kamala Harris. Also mentioned were MSNBC\u2019s Chris Hayes and Joe Scarborough and CNN\u2019s Chris Cuomo and Van Jones. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hasson also targeted two Supreme Court justices and two social media company executives and searched online for their home addresses in March 2018, within minutes of searching firearm sales websites, according to prosecutors. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Investigators found 15 guns, including seven rifles, and more than 1,000 rounds of ammunition at Hasson\u2019s basement apartment. He researched how to make homemade bombs and mortars, studied sniper training and used his government computer to search for information about Nazis and Adolf Hitler, prosecutors said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hasson, a former Marine, worked at Coast Guard headquarters in Washington on a program to acquire advanced new cutters for the agency. He has 30 years of military service and no criminal record, according to Oyer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe has not a blemish on his record prior to this,\u201d she
