John R. Nettleton<\/a>, news outlets reported. He was convicted in January of obstruction of justice, concealing material facts, falsifying records and making false statements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nettleton, 54, was removed from command shortly after civilian Christopher Tur was found floating in waters off the base on the southeastern coast of Cuba in January 2015. Nettleton had commanded the base since June 2012, but not the detention center where suspected terrorists are held.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nettleton wasn\u2019t charged with Tur\u2019s death.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2020\/01\/17\/jury-ex-guantanamo-co-obstructed-justice-in-death-of-civilian-worker\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"173\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/FLOWERS.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Jury: Ex-Guantanamo CO obstructed justice in death of civilian worker<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">A sentencing date has not yet been set.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nettleton denied to his superior officer and others that he had an affair, but investigators later determined that it had happened, according to federal prosecutors in Jacksonville, where Nettleton had been on temporary duty. Tur\u2019s wife confirmed the affair during her testimony, authorities said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Defense attorneys argued that Nettleton couldn\u2019t be found guilty of any of the charges merely for violating provisions of the Uniform Code of Military Justice or for violating any Navy regulations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An autopsy found that Tur, 42, died from drowning but that his ribs had been fractured before he went into the water, and he had a cut to his head. Nettleton is accused of misleading investigators, superiors and subordinates regarding the events leading up to a civilian man&#039;s 2015 death on Naval Station Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the night of his disappearance, Tur confronted the commander and Tur\u2019s wife in front of witnesses at a party at the on-base nightclub. Each man had \u201cconsumed several alcoholic drinks,\u201d according to the indictment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Later that night, Tur went to Nettleton\u2019s residence, where the two men fought. Nettleton\u2019s daughter heard the commotion and came down to see her father on the ground and Tur standing over him shortly before he left the area and wasn\u2019t seen again, according to documents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Around that time, a friend of Tur\u2019s reported getting a call from Tur, who said he was at Nettleton\u2019s house and had \u201cjust knocked the skipper out,\u201d the documents said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After Tur went missing, Nettleton failed to tell people leading the search for him that he was last seen at Nettleton\u2019s house when they fought, and the commander instead led them to believe he was last seen at the nightclub, according to prosecutors.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Capt.
