Dan Sullivan of Alaska coauthored the bill with Democratic Sen. Maria Cantwell of Washington and Republican Sen. Roger Wicker of Mississippi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sullivan in a statement thanked his colleagues \u201cfor recognizing the importance of the Arctic, and for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2019\/02\/23\/coast-guard-finally-gets-polar-icebreaker\/\" target=_blank>supporting the vessels and infrastructure <\/a>that are needed to realize America\u2019s role as an Arctic nation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska expressed support for the approval of additional icebreakers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m proud of the progress that we have made to help the U.S. strengthen its capacity and presence in the Arctic as other Arctic and non-Arctic nations expand theirs,\u201d Murkowski said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Russia has 53 icebreakers and Canada has seven, U.S. Coast Guard data show.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sullivan said at a Senate hearing last week that the White House is considering leasing a private icebreaker to strengthen the Coast Guard\u2019s operation \u201cas early as the end of this month.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The U.S. needs a persistent presence in the Arctic to hold off adversaries, Sullivan said.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2020\/12\/02\/coast-guard-icebreaker-polar-star-heading-to-arctic-as-covid-19-limits-antarctic-operations\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/6151017.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Coast Guard icebreaker Polar Star heading to Arctic as COVID-19 limits Antarctic operations<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The crew of the Polar Star, the U.S. Coast Guard\u2019s only working heavy-duty icebreaker, is preparing for a rare mission north to the Arctic after the coronavirus pandemic scuttled their usual journey.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sullivan referred at the hearing to \u201canother icebreaker that\u2019s in Florida\u201d as a possible leasing option under consideration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Aiviq, owned by Edison Chouest Offshore International, was the only privately-owned, medium-weight icebreaker in the U.S. listed with the Coast Guard. Tracking websites showed the vessel was docked in Tampa, Florida, at the time of Sullivan\u2019s comments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Louisiana-based shipbuilders Edison Chouest built the $200-million Aiviq for a Shell Oil Company offshore Arctic drilling project that was later discontinued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Company owner Gary Chouest and his wife have
