Sailors wanted to know about synthetic training, paternity leave, and everything in between. And in an informal poll, mother gave the new boss an assessment of fleet morale.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Adm. John Richardson,\u00a0who took<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">assumed<\/span> the CNO reins\u00a0<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">reigns as\u00a0chief of naval operation<\/span>on Friday<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">Sept. 18<\/span>, answered each query with the calm poise of a former submarine skipper. <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">common to a sub commander.\u00a0<\/span>He identified four priorities for the Navy on his watch<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">categories that will characterize the Navy going forward<\/span>: Safety and integrity, accountability and assessment, creativity and initiative, and resilience.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A sailor&#8217;s request to boost paternity leave was the first to receive a round of applause.\u00a0Richardson said the policy is driven by the Pentagon and signed into law by Congress, but promised to take the request to appropriate leaders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>Sailors aired a variety of grievances. Some were unhappy that food and housing allowances are included in calculating base childcare costs. Fielding an\u00a0<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">new <\/span>improved flame-resistant coverall was a popular topic; CNO said he is in favor, but &#8220;we have some work to do.&#8221; Richardson said\u00a0shorter deployments &#8220;are achievable,&#8221; and\u00a0by fiscal year 2017\u00a0none will last\u00a0longer than seven months,\u00a0barring an emergency or war.\u00a0<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">contingency).<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In closing, the CNO conducted an informal poll to measure <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">the\u00a0<\/span>morale<span class=\"rte rte-comment\"> of the force<\/span>. The majority said it was good, with about 20 percent who view it as high and about the same number seeing it as poor.\u00a0<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">Roughly 20 percent said it was poor, the majority said it was good, about 209 percent said it was good\u00a0high, a small minority categorized it as excellent, and sailors in single digits said it was outstanding. <\/span>Richardson thanked them for their perspective.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This was Richardson&#8217;s first All Hands Call as CNO, and it was not the typical format.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Richardson <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">nswered questions alongside\u00a0While a CNO typically flies solo at such events, Richardson <\/span>was joined by Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy (AW\/NAC)\u00a0Mike Stevens\u00a0\u2014 a team approach that will be more common, the MCPON told Navy Times. The duo also answered\u00a0<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">took a new approach by allowing <\/span>questions via Twitter and Facebook. This step will help ensure that every question gets a response, now or later,\u00a0<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">While this enabled shy sailors to submit questions, it also ensured every question could be answered, if not in person then in later response, <\/span>said Cmdr.
