{"id":28222,"date":"2016-02-05T10:14:14","date_gmt":"2016-02-05T10:14:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2016\/02\/05\/sex-for-career-advancement-navy-says-commander-propositioned-subordinate\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T19:29:45","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T19:29:45","slug":"sex-for-career-advancement-navy-says-commander-propositioned-subordinate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2016\/02\/05\/sex-for-career-advancement-navy-says-commander-propositioned-subordinate\/","title":{"rendered":"Sex for career advancement: Navy says commander propositioned subordinate"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The commander of a multi-billion dollar American warship was fired on the eve of its Middle East deployment last year after a drunken night out with his subordinates\u00a0led to <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">mess of an evening at a bar near Yorktown Naval Weapons Station in Virginia, <\/span>allegations of sexual harassment<span class=\"rte rte-comment\"> and a reported history of inappropriate behavior comments brought down the skipper of the cruiser Anzio last summer on the eve of its Middle East deployment<\/span>, Navy Times has learned<span class=\"rte rte-comment\"> according to an official new report on the 2015 firing<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Capt. Brian Sorenson\u2019s 25-year military career began to unravel\u00a0<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">hit the skids <\/span>Aug.<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">ust<\/span> 30, when he and several junior officers assigned to the cruiser Anzio\u00a0attended\u00a0<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">his wardroom procured the duty van and headed to Yorktown Pub for <\/span>a &#8220;wetting down&#8221; party at a bar in Yorktown, Virginia. He is <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">As most in the group grew of the officers got steadily more intoxicated, the CO is <\/span>accused of engaging in a highly inappropriate conversation with a woman who worked for him<span class=\"rte rte-comment\"> subordinate\u00a0one of his female junior officers<\/span>, allegedly propositioning her for sex in exchange for career advancement<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">\u00a0and also asking her about specific sex actsher if she liked anal sex<\/span>, according to a Navy investigation report obtained Thursday <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">Feb. 4\u00a0[[[THIS WEEK?\/\/A.deG.]]]\u00a0by Navy Times <\/span>via the Freedom of Information Act.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The report also includes allegations <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">There were was also allegations <\/span>from a female officer\u00a0<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">in Sorenson\u2019s\u00a0wardroom <\/span>who told investigators that\u00a0Sorenson grabbed her buttocks while they were in the bar. It is unclear if the complaint was made by the same\u00a0woman or another, as the Navy&#8217;s report is heavily redacted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last month,\u00a0Sorenson was found guilty of violating the Uniform Code of Military Justice. An admiral has recommended the captain be separated from the service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reached by email,\u00a0Sorenson declined to comment on the Navy&#8217;s report. His attorney, Greg McCormack, provided a brief statement to Navy Times indicating the captain intends to appeal his case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Capt. Sorenson has an exemplary service record and has provided 25 years of outstanding naval service to our country,&#8221; McCormack said. &#8220;We look forward to this legal process, which will provide a forum for the truth to prevail.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Navy&#8217;s\u00a0investigation was conducted by Carrier Strike Group 8, Anzio&#8217;s parent command. The ship\u00a0<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">which is the Truman strike group currently deployed in the Middle East. Anzio <\/span>and its crew of about 350 are in the Middle East currently as part of the Truman carrier strike group. They are tasked with providing air defense for the aircraft carrier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>According to the Navy&#8217;s report, the woman with whom Sorenson allegedly sought to have sex was nearing the\u00a0<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">The next day the junior officer, who was closing in on her <\/span>deadline to receive <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">for getting <\/span>her surface warfare officer qualification. She told investigators that the day after their group outing in Yorktown,\u00a0<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">claims <\/span>Sorenson sat her down in his cabin and asked her if she would sleep <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">have sex <\/span>with him\u00a0in exchange for her SWO pin, a Navy uniform device that denotes an <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">that the <\/span>officer has achieved all basic qualifications required of the service&#8217;s surface warfare community. <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">[[[LET&#8217;S EXPLAIN WHAT THIS IS, FOR THE LAYPERSON\/\/A.deG.]]]<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The woman&#8217;s name is redacted in the report. As a rule, Navy Times does not identify the alleged\u00a0victims of sexual assault or harassment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>Word of the alleged encounter in Sorenson&#8217;s cabin spread among his crew, <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">ations and rampant rumors on the deckplates <\/span>prompting the ship&#8217;s executive officer and top enlisted sailor <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">command master chief <\/span>to initiate<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">d<\/span> a command investigation that ultimately ended with Sorenson\u2019s firing <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">relief <\/span>in mid-September. On <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">At Admiral&#8217;s Mast oOn <\/span>Jan. 4, Sorenson was found guilty of violating the service&#8217;s sexual harassment guidelines, of committing\u00a0sexual misconduct and of conduct unbecoming an officer and a gentleman, said\u00a0<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">\u00a0counts under the UCMJ\u00a0by Rear Adm. Bret Batchelder at Admiral\u2019s Mast on three counts under the UCMJ.\u00a0Rear Adm. Bret Batchelder, commander of Carrier Strike Group 8, concluded that found Capt. Sorenson violated three articles of the Military&#8217;s legal code,\u00a0including violating a lawful order &#8212; in this case the sexual harassment guidelines, sexual misconduct for &#8220;abusive sexual contact&#8221;, and conduct unbecoming an officer and a gentleman,&#8221; said <\/span>Lt. Cmdr. Myers Vasquez, a spokesman for Naval Surface Force Atlantic.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sorenson was given a punitive letter of reprimand<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">. The carrier strike group&#8217;s commander, Rear Adm. Bret Batchelder, also recommended the captain be separated from the Navy\u00a0detached for cause and be made to show cause for retention in the Navy<\/span>, Vasquez said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sorenson elected not to submit a\u00a0<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">The captain&#8217;s <\/span>statement to investigators, according to a Navy attorney familiar with the case, but\u00a0<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">on what transpired that night\u00a0<\/span>a synopsis of the investigators&#8217; interview with him was included in the report provided to Navy Times. Investigators noted that while Sorenson <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">did <\/span>admitted drinking too much, he <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">excess. He <\/span>declined<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">, however,<\/span> to answer questions about the allegations he made sexual advances. <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">any inappropriate comments made outside the bar or in his stateroom without his attorney present.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When reached by email, Sorenson declined to comment directly on the report. In a statement, his attorney Greg McCormack said the truth would come out through the ongoing legal process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Capt. Sorenson has an exemplary service record and has provided 25 years of outstanding Naval service to our country,&#8221; McCormack said. &#8220;We look forward to this legal process, which will provide a forum for the truth to prevail.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sorenson, a 1991 Naval Academy graduate,\u00a0will likely <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">now have to <\/span>face an administrative board to determine if he should be retained in the service, and he&#8217;ll be allowed to argue\u00a0<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">where he can press <\/span>his side of the story<span class=\"rte rte-comment\"> before the board&#8217;s members<\/span>. <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">Under the non-judicial punishment process, Sorenson was found guilty based on the preponderance of evidence, not beyond a reasonable doubt.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sorenson, who assumed command of Anzio in November 2014, was reassigned to SURFLANT. Earlier in 2015, he led a relatively junior Anzio crew in the multi-national Joint Warrior exercise \u2014 the largest of its kind in Europe. Prior to taking Anzio&#8217;s helm, he had served as commodore of Afloat Training Group Atlantic; commanding officer of destroyer Mitscher; and deputy commodore for Destroyer Squadron 26. Sorenson is a 1991 Naval Academy graduate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>&#8216;Wetting down&#8217;\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The night at the bar in Yorktown\u00a0<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">that wrecked Sorenson\u2019s career <\/span>began <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">started <\/span>as a promotion party. The so-called &#8220;wetting down&#8221; was held <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">at a bar in Yorktown <\/span>while Anzio was being loaded with ammunition <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">in town getting its load of ammo\u00a0load-out of ammo <\/span>ahead of its <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">her <\/span>November deployment<span class=\"rte rte-comment\"> in November<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The wardroom \u2014 a naval\u00a0term for the ship&#8217;s officers \u2014 hopped in a government van <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">to the bar <\/span>at 6 p.m. When they arrived at the bar, several\u00a0<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">to the bar,\u00a0a bar where lots of <\/span>enlisted crew members were there\u00a0drinking as well, the report says.\u00a0The officers, including Sorenson, began quizzing the woman <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">junior officer\u00a0a young woman who was closing in on the deadline for her SWO quals on <\/span>about the responsibilities expected of an officer of the deck<span class=\"rte rte-comment\"> knowledge<\/span>, a position of significance among the ship&#8217;s crew.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the evening, many of the officers became intoxicated, according to the Navy&#8217;s report.\u00a0At one point, Sorenson allegedly approached the woman and asked her to <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">that she <\/span>meet him on a bench outside the bar, the report says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The two shared a cigarette, and Sorenson allegedly\u00a0asked if she would have sex with <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">perform oral sex on <\/span>him, according the report. The woman thought it was a joke, and said she would in exchange for her surface warfare officer pin, the report says. <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">He continued pressing her on sex, a claim that was backed up by witnesses in the report.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A crew member\u00a0who was outside the bar on his phone, talking to his grandmother, overheard the commander making\u00a0explicit remarks to the woman and asking her about specific sexual\u00a0acts, according to the report.\u00a0<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">claimed he heard the CO ask the officer &#8220;Does anal interest you?&#8221;<\/span>Other sailors told investigators that they were uncomfortable seeing Sorenson\u00a0and the junior officer sitting so close together. One sailor<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">s<\/span> remarked that the scene looked like an example from one of the Navy\u2019s sexual assault prevention training videos, the investigation says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the night wore on, <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">it \u00a0and got sloppier. One sailor told investigators that <\/span>the officers&#8217; behavior grew sloppier, one sailor told investigators<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">\u00a0were completely out of line<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The whole night the officers were acting like hooligans,&#8221; the sailor<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">s<\/span> said in his statement to investigators. &#8220;I used to be a [bartender] and could tell that the get-together of the officers was turning into a sludge-fest. And if I was serving the officers, I would have cut them off.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sorenson was intoxicated when he got into the van to go back to the ship, according to\u00a0the report. Witnesses told investigators that the captain kept repeating two phrases: &#8220;The crew is all that matters&#8221; and &#8220;f&#8212; the crew,&#8221; the report says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>&#8216;Privacy Please&#8217;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The next morning, as rumors of the officers\u2019 behavior <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">drunken antics <\/span>circulated<span class=\"rte rte-comment\"> on the deck plates<\/span>, Sorenson allegedly <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">the CO <\/span>summoned the woman <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">junior officer <\/span>to his stateroom to discuss her surface warfare qualifications, the report states.\u00a0When she entered the room, Sorenson allegedly\u00a0asked her to hang a &#8220;Privacy Please&#8221; sign on the outside of the door. The officer told investigators that that&#8217;s\u00a0when Sorenson propositioned her, according to the Navy&#8217;s report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;If I give you your SWO pin, will you sleep with me?&#8221; her statement reads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When she refused, Sorenson allegedly made more suggestive remarks, <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">. He then he asked her more suggestive questions and then proceeded to <\/span>before finally turning to <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">asking her <\/span>questions about navigation rules and other knowledge required of the officer of the deck, the report states<span class=\"rte rte-comment\"> questions<\/span>. Skelton\/Released<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">investigator notes that the <\/span>allegations are &#8220;he said, she said,&#8221; investigators wrote in the report,\u00a0adding that the third-party witness testimony about Sorenson\u2019s alleged behavior <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">discussion questioning her sexual preferences and history <\/span>the night before made the woman&#8217;s statement<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">s made in private<\/span> more credible. Additionally, the investigator concluded in the report, the officer had little if nothing to gain by making unfounded allegations, especially with her qualifications deadline looming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span class=\"rte rte-comment\">The junior officer confided in others about Sorenson\u2019s alleged propositions, and the rumors circulated with vigor, the report says. As the situation began to spin out of control, the XO and command master chief approached Sorenson and told him they were going to recommend a carrier strike group-led investigation into the allegations.\u00a0<\/span>When investigators interviewed others on the ship,\u00a0<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">peeled back the onion, <\/span>they heard from multiple\u00a0<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">of the <\/span>female officers who reported having been made to feel\u00a0uncomfortable by Sorenson. One even kept a logbook detailing interactions with Sorenson that she deemed creepy, the report says<span class=\"rte rte-comment\"> creeped her out<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Capt. Brian Sorenson should not return to command of USS Anzio or any other command, at sea or at shore,&#8221; the investigating officer wrote in the report&#8217;s opinions. &#8220;Strong consideration should be given to charging Sorenson with violations of the UCMJ.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rear Adm.
