Truman<\/a> put back to sea on Saturday, exactly three months after the warship returned home from one the most unique deployments in years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That was a test run of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2018\/11\/22\/on-this-thanksgiving-cno-thankful-for-carrier-dynamic-force-employment-success\/\" target=\"_blank\">Dynamic Force Employment <\/a>plan created by former Defense Secretary Jim Mattis to keep potential enemies guessing about where and when carrier crews will deploy overseas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Truman\u2019s cruise lasted from April 11 to Dec. 16 last year but it included a Norfolk pit stop in July that officials termed a \u201cworking port visit\u201d before heading out again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This time, the carrier isn\u2019t expected to wander too far from Virginia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It just completed a routine <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gao.gov\/assets\/690\/681175.pdf\" target=_blank>Continuous Maintenance Availability <\/a>in Norfolk and as the designated reserve carrier for the East Coast the crew is still in its \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/news.usni.org\/2017\/08\/03\/navy-proves-high-readiness-levels-carriers-sustainment-phase-leads-maintenance-savings-later\" target=_blank>sustainment phase<\/a>.\u201d That means they have to be ready to sail off on a combat deployment, if necessary, so it\u2019s back to training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTruman is heading out for a scheduled independent steaming event to get the crew\u2019s feet wet after a couple of months home,\u201d Naval Air Forces Atlantic spokesman Cmdr. Dave Hecht told Navy Times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cShe\u2019ll get used to operating at sea again and will do some carrier qualifications again with the local <a href=\"http:\/\/www.northropgrumman.com\/Capabilities\/C2AGreyhound\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=_blank>C-2 [Carrier Onboard Delivery] <\/a>squadrons, but I can\u2019t tell you how long she\u2019ll be gone, or where she\u2019ll go.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Truman is still slated to enter a longer and more rigorous maintenance availability period later this year before starting its <a href=\"https:\/\/navylive.dodlive.mil\/2014\/01\/15\/what-is-the-optimized-fleet-response-plan-and-what-will-it-accomplish\/\" target=_blank>pre-deployment training portion of the Navy\u2019s Optimized Fleet Response Plan<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2018\/12\/16\/its-historic-deployment-over-what-does-the-truman-carrier-strike-group-do-now\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"148\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/L1002070-Edit.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Its historic deployment over, what does the Truman Carrier Strike Group do now?<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Sunday ended what admirals on the Norfolk pier and inside the Pentagon agree was a successful implementation of the Dynamic Force Employment plan created by Defense Secretary Jim Mattis to shake up the Navy\u2019s carrier strike group deployment schedules.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Truman\u2019s a busy carrier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In early 2014, it finished a nearly nine-month cruise that took it to the Mediterranean Sea and the Persian Gulf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In late 2015, just over 18 months later, Truman sailed back to wage war in Iraq and Syria before returning on July 13, 2016.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And then came the back-and-forth deployments last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite the Truman\u2019s frequent use overseas, a debate continues to swirl at the Pentagon and on Capitol Hill about the flattop\u2019s future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the latest Fiscal Year 2020 budget request, military officials telegraphed a request to skip the ship\u2019s<a href=\"https:\/\/nns.huntingtoningalls.com\/carriers\/refueling-and-complex-overhaul-rcoh\/\" target=\"_blank\"> Refueling and Complex Overhaul<\/a> session.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During an RCOH \u2014 which arrives roughly 25 years into the service life of a Nimitz-class carrier \u2014 shipyard workers refuel the reactors and revamp other parts of the warship<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mothballing the Truman instead of refueling it would free up funds for investing in the new Gerald R. Faram\/staff)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But it remains unclear how Congress will handle the Navy\u2019s latest request to retire the Truman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A few years ago, however, the Pentagon tried to scrap sister carrier George Washington, only to be rebuffed by lawmakers who voted to overhaul it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The George Washington is about 1 1\/2 years into <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.huntingtoningalls.com\/releases\/uss-george-washington-cvn73-rcoh-contract\" target=_blank>its $2.8 billion midlife overhaul<\/a> at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huntingtoningalls.com\/careers\/\" target=_blank>Huntington Ingalls Newport News shipyard<\/a> near here.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The aircraft carrier Harry S.
