{"id":28781,"date":"2022-07-27T19:10:42","date_gmt":"2022-07-27T19:10:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2022\/07\/27\/navy-and-marine-corps-replacing-faulty-aircraft-ejection-seat-components\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T19:35:28","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T19:35:28","slug":"navy-and-marine-corps-replacing-faulty-aircraft-ejection-seat-components","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2022\/07\/27\/navy-and-marine-corps-replacing-faulty-aircraft-ejection-seat-components\/","title":{"rendered":"Navy and Marine Corps replacing faulty aircraft ejection seat components"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Navy and Marine Corps are replacing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2021\/12\/13\/jet-ejection-seat-breathing-system-oversight-gets-ramped-up-in-defense-bill\/\" target=\"_blank\">ejection seat parts<\/a> in some fixed wing aircraft \u2014 including the F\/A-18 Super Hornet \u2014 after the manufacturer discovered a defect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The issue involves cartridge actuated devices, or CADs, which deploy a parachute when aviators pull their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2020\/11\/09\/pilot-error-leadership-failures-and-faulty-ejection-seat-led-to-fatal-june-f-16-crash-at-shaw\/\" target=\"_blank\">ejection handle<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All told, the issue was found in the F\/A-18B\/C\/D Hornet, F\/A-18E\/F Super Hornet and the E\/A-18G Growler, as well as the T-45 Goshawk and F-5 Tiger II training aircraft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Naval Air Systems Command declined to disclose how many aircraft are affected, citing operational security concerns, but said in a statement that the issue \u201conly affects aircraft equipped with CADs within a limited range of lot numbers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No injuries or deaths have been reported due to the issue, NAVAIR officials told Navy Times. And he loved to fly,\u201d the commander of Shaw&#039;s 20th Fighter Wing said this summer.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAfter being notified of potential defect by the vendor, Martin Baker, the team used validated radiography procedures to scan on-hand inventory to verify each item was properly manufactured before sending to the fleet to replace existing CADs,\u201d the Navy said in a news release Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Naval Surface Warfare Center Indian Head Division started distributing approved replacement parts to fleet maintenance centers on Sunday, and additional shipments are expected the rest of the week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe CAD will be replaced at the aircraft\u2019s assigned squadron and the aircraft will be inspected before its next flight,\u201d the Navy said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Secretaries of the Navy and Air Force are required to provide semi-annual reports to Congress on the status of ejection seats in use, thanks to a provision <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2021\/12\/13\/jet-ejection-seat-breathing-system-oversight-gets-ramped-up-in-defense-bill\/\" target=\"_blank\">included in the 2022 National Defense Authorization Act<\/a>. Specifically, the services must detail how many ejection seats have a waiver that allows them to remain in use, even if repairs or replacement parts are necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The measure was included in the defense policy bill following the 2020 death of Air Force pilot 1st Lt.
