{"id":29468,"date":"2018-05-07T15:53:37","date_gmt":"2018-05-07T15:53:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2018\/05\/07\/tim-kennedy-talks-about-trying-not-to-die-in-new-tv-show\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T02:46:19","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T02:46:19","slug":"tim-kennedy-talks-about-trying-not-to-die-in-new-tv-show","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/off-duty\/2018\/05\/07\/tim-kennedy-talks-about-trying-not-to-die-in-new-tv-show\/","title":{"rendered":"Tim Kennedy talks about trying not to die in new TV show"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2017\/01\/17\/tim-kennedy-retires-from-the-ufc-mixed-martial-arts\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">Tim Kennedy<\/a> retired from professional <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2016\/08\/12\/tim-kennedy-is-returning-to-the-ufc-cage\/\" title=\"\" class=\"selected-link\" target=\"_blank\">MMA<\/a> fighting in early 2017, he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/TimKennedyMMA\/photos\/a.123237191046909.10588.109175182453110\/1201757499861534\/?type=3&amp;theater\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">apologized<\/a> to his wife for finding \u201canother super dangerous thing\u201d to fill his time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And by the looks of it, the Green Beret and Texas Army National Guard soldier doesn\u2019t plan on changing that sentiment any time soon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kennedy, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2017\/04\/17\/tim-kennedy-reenlists-in-special-forces-praises-u-s-dropping-mother-of-all-bombs\/\" title=\"\" class=\"selected-link\" target=\"_blank\">re-enlisted<\/a> in Army Special Forces in April 2017, recently wrapped up filming an upcoming show on the Discovery Channel with a working title of \u201cHard to Kill.\u201d In the show, he travels around the country to walk in the shoes of everyday people who risk their lives performing dangerous jobs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s somewhere between \u2018Dirty Jobs\u2019 meets \u2018Fear Factor\u2019 meets \u2018Survivor,\u2019\u201d Kennedy told Military Times on April 26. \u201cIt shows inherently dangerous jobs people do every day that don\u2019t really get attention.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/your-army\/2017\/04\/17\/tim-kennedy-reenlists-in-special-forces-praises-u-s-dropping-mother-of-all-bombs\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"201\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/635883094469490927-tim-kennedyjpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Tim Kennedy reenlists in Special Forces, praises U.S. dropping &#8216;mother of all bombs&#8217;<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">When Tim Kennedy, a former Special Forces sniper and Texas Army Guard soldier, retired from the mixed martial arts world in January, he said he wasn&#039;t going anywhere.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kennedy, whose work on the History Channel\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.history.com\/shows\/hunting-hitler\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cHunting Hitler\u201d<\/a> series included trips to Europe and South America, said he and the Discovery Channel producers found extraordinary stories of survival on the job, including pilots living through crashes and cowboys recovering after being trampled by bulls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The show puts Kennedy in some of these harrowing situations; as he put it, \u201cWe re-create it and see if I die.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One example: The show re-tells the story of a bush pilot whose helicopter lost power and crashed into the Arctic Ocean. The pilot at the story\u2019s center had to dive down to retrieve his survival equipment and fight off polar bears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the segment, Kennedy was dropped in the middle of the Arctic in a helicopter. (Courtesy of Tim Kennedy)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/your-army\/2017\/01\/17\/tim-kennedy-retires-from-the-ufc-mixed-martial-arts\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"201\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/635883094469490927-tim-kennedyjpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Tim Kennedy retires from the UFC, mixed martial arts<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The 37-year-old announced it Tuesday via Facebook.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another segment put him at the base of a mountain as an avalanche approached.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhen you get turned upside down and you don\u2019t know if you\u2019re going to be able to take another breath, and the snow is creating an ice cocoon coffin and it\u2019s pitch black and below freezing, it\u2019s pretty unnerving,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Russ McCarroll, senior vice president of production and development at Discovery Communications, said having someone with Kennedy\u2019s experience made the show a little easier to film.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf we\u2019d taken an individual and done this, we\u2019d still be in the training phase and not shooting the show yet,\u201d McCarroll told Military Times. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In other segments, Kennedy escapes a sinking boat that\u2019s caught fire (he smashed a window, cut his leg on the glass and earned a hospital visit) and steps into a rodeo ring to distract a bull from a thrown rider.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It didn\u2019t go well. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c[The bull rider] got hurt bad,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s real. (Courtesy of Tim Kennedy)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>\u2018UNKNOWN, SILENT HEROES\u2019<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The show is \u201cpretty raw,\u201d Kennedy said, adding that it\u2019s just him, some cameras and a couple of people who actually do the job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAll these people that put food on the table and put gas in our cars and get oil in the center of the ocean and fly helicopters to the middle of nowhere,\u201d Kennedy said. \u201cAnd show how badass they are.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The show consults experts and people who have lived through these experiences, but Kennedy does everything himself. He said he was drawn to the project because he knows so many people who do these extraordinary things that nobody knows about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey\u2019re the real unknown silent heroes that do everything we take for granted,\u201d he said. \u201cI want [viewers] to appreciate the people they all take for granted &#8230; maybe take a second and pause and appreciate everything that\u2019s happened for our lives to be so easy.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The six-episode first season will air on the Discovery Channel this summer,
