{"id":29556,"date":"2019-01-24T03:35:25","date_gmt":"2019-01-24T03:35:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2019\/01\/24\/this-company-is-building-barrier-penetrating-556mm-rounds-for-the-marines\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T02:47:36","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T02:47:36","slug":"this-company-is-building-barrier-penetrating-556mm-rounds-for-the-marines","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/off-duty\/2019\/01\/24\/this-company-is-building-barrier-penetrating-556mm-rounds-for-the-marines\/","title":{"rendered":"This company is building \u2018barrier-penetrating&#8217; 5.56mm rounds for the Marines"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">LAS VEGAS \u2014 The Marine Corps recently selected a Vista Outdoor company to build a barrier penetrating 5.56mm round that\u2019s especially useful for potential urban combat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The contract with Federal Cartridge Company, a Vista subsidiary, puts more than $41 million <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2018\/11\/28\/the-navy-and-marine-corps-are-dropping-some-money-on-barrier-penetrating-556-mm-ammo\/\" target=\"_blank\">behind the effort,<\/a> which is expected to run into 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This comes after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2017\/05\/25\/chief-the-army-has-developed-a-bullet-that-penetrates-5-56-mm-resistant-body-armor\/\" target=_blank>Army Chief of Staff Gen. Mark Milley <\/a>told Congress last year that the body armor penetration in the existing 5.56mm stocks was lacking, and he worried about overmatch with potential adversaries such as Russia and China in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2018\/10\/09\/major-changes-for-small-arms-are-on-the-way-with-the-armys-saw-replacement\/\" target=_blank>small arms fight<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/your-army\/2018\/07\/12\/the-armys-next-machine-gun-could-fire-caseless-ammo-and-one-of-these-companies-might-build-it\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/ARM-machine-gun-web.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">The Army\u2019s next machine gun could fire caseless ammo \u2014 and one of these companies might build it<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Textron Systems has been working on cased telescoped ammunition designs for 14 years.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new setup makes changes to the bullet to help it retain lethality after penetrating \u201cintermediate barriers\u201d such as windshields or doors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesse Whiteside, senior director of government and military sales for Vista, talked with Military Times at this year\u2019s Shooting, Hunting and Outdoor Trade Show here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s basically the construction of the bullet itself. (Suriya Phosri\/Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army narrowed its search for an intermediate caliber by selecting 6.8mm late last year as part of its Next Generation Squad Weapon program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The company also won a contract in 2017 to provide a \u201cfrangible\u201d 5.56mm round for use at Army training ranges. The same type of round is designed to lessen the chance of ricochet, so it is sometimes used by special operations forces for that purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That round, the AA4 Mk 311 Mod 3, was scooped up for a $52 million contract back in 2017 that should produce an estimated 100 million rounds by 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In recent years the Army and Marine Corps have been pushing for more advancements to squeeze more out of the 5.56mm round, which has been the standard caliber since the 1960s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those efforts have been seen as a way to bridge the gap between the existing weapons and ammo stock as the Army and Marine Corps pursue a shift to the 6.8mm caliber round in a new Squad Automatic Weapon and new rifle or carbine for close combat units.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The bullets are for penetrating barriers such as windshields and
