In light of this information, it was not prudent for the Department\u2019s exchanges to continue selling them to DoD personnel,\u201d DoD spokesman Army Maj. Dave Eastburn said in an email response to questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eastburn couldn\u2019t describe the technical aspects of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fifthdomain.com\/smr\/rsa\/2018\/04\/19\/future-cyber-threats-are-coming-from-inside-the-architecture\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">potential threats<\/a>, citing security reasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Department is evaluating the situation and will determine the necessity of a DoD-wide advisory regarding the purchase or use of these devices,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/management\/pay-benefits\/2018\/05\/01\/coming-soon-beer-and-wine-to-your-local-commissary\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"157\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/beer-and-wine-AP_280758686332.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Coming soon: Beer and wine for sale in your local commissary<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Coming to a commissary near you: Beer and wine.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the meantime, service members who have these devices \u201cshould be aware of the media coverage concerning the security risks posed by the use of the devices, regardless of where the service member purchased the device,\u201d Eastburn said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He referred to Feb. 13 testimony before the Senate Select Intelligence Committee from the Director of National Intelligence, as well as the heads of the FBI, CIA, the National Security Agency, Defense Intelligence Agency and National Geospatial Intelligence Agency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At that hearing, <a href=\"http:\/\/caucus.militarytimes.com\/speaker\/tom-cotton\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark.<\/a>, asked those officials to raise their hands if any would use products or services from Huawei or ZTE, or if they would recommend that private American citizens use them. None of them raised their hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Huawei officials countered those concerns, in a statement provided to Military Times: \u201cWe remain committed to openness and transparency in everything we do and want to be clear that no government has ever asked us to compromise the security or integrity of any of our networks or devices.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Huawei\u2019s products are sold in 170 countries and \u201cmeet the highest standards of security, privacy and engineering in every country we operate globally including the U.S.,\u201d officials stated. \u201cHuawei is an employee-owned company and will continue to develop its global business through a significant commitment to innovation and [research and development] as well as to delivering technology that helps our customers succeed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The DoD directive came from the office of the under secretary of defense for personnel and readiness April 25, Eastburn said, and the products have been removed from exchange stores and exchange concessionaires worldwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cotton and Sens. John Cornyn, R-Texas, and Marco Rubio, R-Fla., have introduced legislation to prevent the U.S. government from using Huawei or ZTE products, or from contracting with companies that use
