Long is also believed to have killed himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Marine Corps extends its deepest condolences to the families of the victims in this senseless tragedy,\u201d the service said in a statement releasing Long\u2019s service record details.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Marine Corps Commandant Gen. Robert Neller offered his thoughts on the shooting in a tweet later Thursday, calling Long\u2019s actions \u201cdespicable.\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is the second mass shooting in recent memory conducted by a former service member. Almost exactly one year ago, former airman Devin Kelley opened fire on a Texas church, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2017\/11\/07\/air-force-investigates-mistakes-that-allowed-texas-church-shooter-to-get-guns\/\">killing 26<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Like Kelley, Long had previous run-ins with law enforcement. His last duty station was with 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, Third Marine Division, at Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii. He left the service in 2013 with the rank of corporal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Long is a decorated veteran, having deployed to Afghanistan during the Corps\u2019 push to clear large swaths of the volatile Helmand province, Afghanistan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The years 2010 to 2011 would mark one of the bloodiest periods for the Corps during its participation in the Afghan conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One unit alone, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2017\/01\/06\/the-u-s-marines-are-sending-a-task-force-back-to-afghanistan-s-helmand-province\/\" target=\"_blank\">3rd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment<\/a>, lost nearly 25 Marines as it fought to clear rural villages and farmland in Sangin, Afghanistan from Taliban militants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">2010 also marked the launching of a massive joint NATO, U.S. and Afghan operation to clear the Taliban stronghold in Marjah, Afghanistan dubbed \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2015\/02\/20\/for-marjah-veterans-5th-anniversary-is-bittersweet\/\" target=_blank>Operation Moshtarak<\/a>.\u201d That operation would claim the lives of nearly 50 American troops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among Long\u2019s awards are two Navy Unit Commendations, or NUC, which is only awarded to units for \u201coutstanding heroism in action against the enemy,\u201d according to the Navy\u2019s award criteria instructions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTo justify this award, the unit must have performed service of a character comparable to that which would merit the award of a Silver Star Medal for heroism, or a Legion of Merit for meritorious service to an individual,\u201d the Navy and Marine Corps awards manual stipulates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The NUC rates just below the Presidential Unit Citation in order of precedence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Long\u2019s other awards included: Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation, Combat Action Ribbon; Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal; two Sea Service Deployment Ribbons, Afghanistan Campaign Medal; Global War on Terrorism Service Medal; National Defense Service Medal; and the NATO Medal-ISAF Afghanistan, according to his Marine Corps records.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Heartfelt condolences to those suffering from the tragic &amp; senseless act of violence <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/hashtag\/ThousandOaks?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#ThousandOaks<\/a>.
