{"id":30906,"date":"2015-12-12T20:30:51","date_gmt":"2015-12-12T20:30:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2015\/12\/12\/editorial-break-navy-drinking-culture\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T19:32:19","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T19:32:19","slug":"editorial-break-navy-drinking-culture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/opinion\/2015\/12\/12\/editorial-break-navy-drinking-culture\/","title":{"rendered":"Editorial: Break Navy drinking culture"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>It\u2019s a shame to see a career flame-out due to <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">by <\/span>heavy drinking as recently has happened\u00a0<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">happened in recent days <\/span>to one of the Navy\u2019s top supply officers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span class=\"rte rte-comment\">But<\/span>Sadly, however, it\u2019s an all-too-common sailor&#8217;s tale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Drinking to excess\u00a0fuels more than half of all Navy misconduct cases and reported sexual assaults. It also is behind many<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">, many<\/span> accidents, injuries and deaths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>Beyond the effects of alcohol itself, an enabling aspect in <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">\u00a0the root cause behind <\/span>Rear Adm. David Baucom\u2019s conduct <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">incident <\/span>and so many others is a Navy culture that continues to glorify <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">celebrate <\/span>irresponsible and even dangerous levels of alcohol abuse, the Navy\u2019s latest anti-booze campaign be damned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The hard-drinking culture will only be broken when those at the deckplates \u2014 chiefs, first- and second-class petty officers <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">\u2014\u00a0\u00a0first classes and second classes<\/span>\u2014 stop romanticizing alcohol abuse. Yes, many enlisted leaders are working to keep young sailors from equating liberty and port calls with booze-fueled adventure. But too many Navy newbies are quickly regaled in their living and working spaces\u00a0by seniors with fondly recalled tales of long bouts of drinking and other indulgences. To\u00a0many new sailors, it reinforces what they have heard is\u00a0the Navy way and they become eager to be part of that club.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong>FROM THE ARCHIVES<\/strong>:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/archive.navytimes.com\/article\/20140509\/NEWS\/305090060\/Hagel-instructs-services-renew-efforts-fighting-alcohol-abuse\">Hagel instructs services to renew efforts fighting alcohol abuse<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rather than conducting even more programs warning of the risks of drinking to excess, Navy brass would be wise to do more to reward responsible behavior. For example,\u00a0<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">The next step is to reward the kind of behavior that makes sailors better ambassadors when abroad. The Navy should <\/span>give an advancement edge to petty officers who spend their liberty participating in good works in the community, with charitable or religious organizations, <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">for example, <\/span>or through\u00a0<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">religious\u00a0projects aimed at\u00a0participate in community relations projects like building homes\u00a0and for going on sponsored <\/span>Morale, Welfare and Recreation activities and tours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ending a long-established culture of hard drinking won&#8217;t be done overnight, but its allure can be diminished if the Navy provides alternative activities and new\u00a0incentives to spend time in ways that sailors can help themselves and help others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Have an opinion or personal perspective to share?
