Mike Gilday said in an email Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The spokesman, Cmdr. Nathan Christensen, declined to comment as to whether the sea service planned to change the name of the warship <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2017\/08\/15\/meet-the-navy-ships-named-in-honor-of-the-confederacy\/\" target=_blank>Chancellorsville<\/a>, commissioned in 1989 and named after a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.public.navy.mil\/surfor\/cg62\/Pages\/namesake.aspx\" target=_blank>Confederate victory<\/a> during the Civil War.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is believed to be the sole Navy ship on active duty named in honor of the Confederacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An image on the command\u2019s official website shows an image featuring several renderings of the Confederate flag.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2017\/08\/15\/meet-the-navy-ships-named-in-honor-of-the-confederacy\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/chancellorsville.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Meet the Navy ships named in honor of the Confederacy<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The Navy has a history of naming ships after icons of the Confederacy. Such honorifics have turned contentious, most recently in the fatal protests last weekend in Charlottesville, Virginia.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gilday\u2019s move comes as the U.S. military and American society in general again reassesses that flag\u2019s place in history, as well as bases that were named after Confederate leaders, in the wake of George Floyd\u2019s death in police custody last month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last week, the U.S. Marine Corps announced that it was officially barring symbols depicting the Confederate battle flag from public spaces on Marine Corps installations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Confederate battle flag has all too often been co-opted by violent extremist and racist groups whose divisive beliefs have no place in our Corps,\u201d the Marine Corps said in a social media post Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;This presents a threat to our core values, unit cohesion, security, and good order and discipline,\u201d the post continued. \u201cThis must be addressed.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a piece for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/ideas\/archive\/2020\/06\/take-confederate-names-off-our-army-bases\/612832\/\" target=_blank>The Atlantic<\/a> this week, retired <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/ideas\/archive\/2020\/06\/take-confederate-names-off-our-army-bases\/612832\/\" target=_blank>U.S. Army Gen. David Petraeus<\/a> called for a removal of base names that pay homage to Confederate \u201ctraitors like Benning and Bragg.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Forts Benning and Bragg are among 10 Army installations named after Confederate officers who fought a losing battle against the Union over slavery during the Civil War.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2020\/06\/08\/key-debate-on-military-protest-response-budget-priorities-set-to-happen-behind-closed-doors-on-capitol-hill\/\">Army Secretary Ryan McCarthy<\/a> and Defense Secretary Mark Esper said Monday they are open to the possibility of renaming the service\u2019s 10 installations currently named after Confederate leaders, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2020\/06\/08\/army-secretary-is-now-open-renaming-posts-named-for-confederate-generals\/\" target=\"_blank\">a spokesperson said Monday<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThese bases are, after all, federal installations, home to soldiers who swear an oath to support and defend the Constitution of the United States,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/ideas\/archive\/2020\/06\/take-confederate-names-off-our-army-bases\/612832\/\" target=_blank>Petraeus wrote<\/a>. \u201cThe irony of training at bases named for those who took up arms against the United States, and for the right to enslave others, is inescapable to anyone paying attention.
