Stennis?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NORFOLK \u2014 A veteran of three deployments, Master-at-Arms 1st Class Mitchell Huff was among the first sailors to disembark the aircraft carrier <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2019\/05\/13\/why-stennis-is-coming-to-norfolk\/\" target=\"_blank\">John C. Faram\/Staff)<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/li><\/ul><a class=\"wp-block-jetpack-slideshow_button-prev swiper-button-prev swiper-button-white\" role=\"button\"><\/a><a class=\"wp-block-jetpack-slideshow_button-next swiper-button-next swiper-button-white\" role=\"button\"><\/a><a aria-label=\"Pause Slideshow\" class=\"wp-block-jetpack-slideshow_button-pause\" role=\"button\"><\/a><div class=\"wp-block-jetpack-slideshow_pagination swiper-pagination swiper-pagination-white\"><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Like Stennis, Lincoln sailed across the globe and then to Norfolk to begin a lengthy midlife <a href=\"https:\/\/nns.huntingtoningalls.com\/carriers\/refueling-and-complex-overhaul-rcoh\/\" target=\"_blank\">Refueling and Complex Overhaul at Newport News Shipbuilding<\/a>, or RCOH.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Workers refueled Lincoln\u2019s nuclear reactors, mended the hull and revamped combat, communications, electrical and mechanical systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unlike Lincoln, Stennis has to wait behind aircraft carrier George Washington, which has about two more years of repairs to go in the yard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Officials hope the RCOH will breathe another 25 years of life into Stennis.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2019\/04\/24\/why-the-us-navy-has-10-ships-130-us-aircraft-and-9000-personnel-in-the-mediterranean\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"150\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/190424-N-NF912-0885-copy.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Why the US Navy has 10 ships, 130 aircraft and 9,000 personnel in the Mediterranean<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Only twice before in the past two decades have two U.S. aircraft carriers operated together in the Mediterranean Sea at the same time.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But until George Washington leaves it will be tasked with other chores, like hosting student naval aviators who need to qualify for carrier operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe have a little bit more operational time. We\u2019re going to be training fleet aviators how to fly at the boat,\u201d the skipper of the Stennis \u2014 Capt. Randy Peck \u2014 told reporters on the pier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To Peck, conducting training flight operations is a \u201creal honor\u201d because it trains \u201cthe next generation of aviators.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSo we\u2019ll do that for a short period of time,\u201d he said. \u201cThen when it\u2019s our time, we\u2019ll start our overhaul and get the Stennis back into the fight.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But first on his mind is moving his crew into new Norfolk digs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s challenging,\u201d he said. \u201cWe\u2019re in the middle of a homeport change right now. We have over 1,000 (family) moves from Bremerton that are to happen in the next month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;So half of our sailors are here and the other half are thinking about getting here.
