A recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.documentcloud.org\/documents\/3897030-Report-to-Congress-VIRGINIA-Class-Industrial.html#document\/p6\">Navy report<\/a> found that the service can continue adding a pair of Virginia-class attack submarines to its fleet each year while still incorporating the future Columbia-class ballistic missile attack subs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Navy has been <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sandiegouniontribune.com\/military\/sd-me-point-loma-20170712-story.html\">under fire recently<\/a> as many of its current ballistic missile attack subs \u2014 Ohio-class \u2014 are nearing retirement, creating a potential lack of deployment-ready submarines. The Columbia-class subs will eventually replace the Ohio-class, but they will not be ready for construction until 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Originally, the Navy said it would have to build either two Virginia-class subs per year or one Virginia-class and one Columbia-class each, according to USNI News.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The report, however, found that building two Virginia-class subs per year, on top of one Columbia-class \u2014 once they are ready \u2014 is a \u201cviable\u201d option and would be highly beneficial for both the Navy and the industrial base.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFor the Navy to come back with a very strong report saying, yep, we don\u2019t have to reduce Virginia-class in the Columbia-class years, to me that needle really moved in terms of the Navy\u2019s confidence, public confidence, in having all these concurrent efforts stay on track and perform,\u201d Rep.
