{"id":31634,"date":"2015-07-10T19:22:04","date_gmt":"2015-07-10T19:22:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2015\/07\/10\/oscar-austin-returns-to-cheers-after-7-5-month-cruise\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T19:23:32","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T19:23:32","slug":"oscar-austin-returns-to-cheers-after-7-5-month-cruise","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2015\/07\/10\/oscar-austin-returns-to-cheers-after-7-5-month-cruise\/","title":{"rendered":"Oscar Austin returns to cheers after 7.5-month cruise"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>NAVAL STATION NORFOLK, Va. \u2014 It was a &#8220;great day for a great crew&#8221; when the <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile <\/span>destroyer Oscar Austin returned to Norfolk Friday <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">the <\/span>morning <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">of July 10<\/span> after a successful <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">8<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">eight<\/span>-month<\/span> independent deployment to the 5th and 6th Fleets that stretched nearly eight months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Logged more than 950 unmanned flight hours with the Scan Eagle at the Horn of Africa and thought Central Command.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cmdr. Russell Sanchez, the destroyer&#8217;s skipper, touted the self sufficiency of his crew. As an independent deployer, the ship was on station anywhere from 40 to 45 days, with parts and materials arriving only once every three weeks<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">21 days<\/span>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;The crew did an outstanding job maintaining the ship and fixing any problems that arose,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This was the first deployment for roughly 70 percent of the crew, whose average age was 21. It&#8217;s nice to be home,&#8221; said Gas Turbine System Technician Electrical 2nd Class (SW) Cody White, who shared the traditional &#8220;first kiss&#8221; with wife, Desiree. &#8220;There were good times and bad times, but overall a good cruise.
