The policy change takes effect immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/coronavirus\/2020\/03\/19\/navy-is-relaxing-grooming-standards-to-limit-exposure-to-covid-19\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"231\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/635563141156086139-121120-n-ik959-840jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Navy is relaxing grooming standards to limit exposure to COVID-19<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Commanding officers \u201cmay allow for additional hair length and bulk on the sides, top and back of the head. At no time will relaxed grooming interfere with the proper wearing of Navy head gear proper use of protective personal equipment (helmets, masks,  hoods, etc.).\u201d<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In March 2020, the Navy issued guidance permitting commanders to relax grooming standards in an attempt to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 and adhere to proper social distancing guidelines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGood judgement of leaders at all levels of the chain of command is required to ensure all possible COVID-19 force health protection precautions are being taken,\u201d the Navy said in the March 2020 NAVADMIN.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The relaxed grooming standards did not apply to facial hair or sideburns and could not interfere with protective personal equipment like helmets and masks, according to
