As a result, flushes from the toilets flowed into Sinclair Inlet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;For two years, people were walking past and nobody smelled it,&#8221; said Cmdr. Ben Leppard, public works officer for Naval Base Kitsap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The problem was discovered last Wednesday after monthly water testing showed elevated bacteria counts, Leppard said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Authorities don&#8217;t believe the spill posed a danger to the public.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2018\/08\/15\/warning-issued-after-80000-gallons-of-sewage-spills-from-naval-base-kitsap\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"157\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/4016739.jpg_179dcf.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Warning issued after 80,000 gallons of sewage spills from Naval Base Kitsap<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Health officials are warning the public to avoid contact with the water of Sinclair Inlet near Bremerton after 80,000 gallons of sewage spilled from Naval Base Kitsap.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Health officials warned the public to stay out of Sinclair Inlet after two sewage spills earlier this year. In August, a blocked sewer line caused 80,000 gallons (300,000 liters) of wastewater to flow through a storm water vault into Sinclair Inlet. In February, an open valve at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard caused a 1,000-gallon (3,785-liter) spill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After the last reported spill, the Navy instituted enhanced testing protocols, which helped officials respond and identify the source of the spill more quickly. The Navy plans to revisit all of the building and trailers that have been put in place on base within the past ten years to get &#8220;a full confirmation that things are going where they&#8217;re supposed to be, such as the wastewater system is going into the wastewater system,&#8221; Leppard said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The estimated 450,000 gallon (1.7 million) spill
