A sailor assigned to a Naval Station Mayport<\/a> died Saturday after he lost control of his motorcycle and went over a bridge, according to the Navy and local news reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aviation Machinist\u2019s Mate Airman Apprentice Patrick Glenn Stellitano, of Maryland, had been assigned to Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron 40<\/a> since August, according to a Navy biography. He enlisted Feb. 25, 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Action News Jax<\/a> reported that Stellitano, 21, was driving his Honda motorcycle around a bend on Nichols Creek Bridge in Jacksonville when he struck a barrier along the right side. Stellitano landed in a marsh below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He was not wearing a helmet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Florida Highway Patrol spokespeople did not return messages from Navy Times on Tuesday and his family could not be reached.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Capt. Teague R. Laguens, commanding officer of HSM-40, said the squadron is heartbroken over Stellitano\u2019s death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe mourn his loss and will honor his service to this great squadron and our great nation by taking care of each other and his family during this tough time,” Laguens said in a statement released to Navy Times. “On behalf of all Airwolves, I extend our deepest condolences and sympathies to Patrick\u2019s family and his friends.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Joshua Campbell, 21, said he and Stellitano met early on at Walkersville High School<\/a> and they graduated together in the class of 2016. Both enjoyed joking and talking in class and they found they complemented each other: Stellitano was adventurous; Campbell was stoic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHe was very fun-loving but from my relationship with him, he had a very deep heart and a very expansive heart,\u201d Campbell said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stellitano was passionate about cars, including a 1993 Mazda Miata he was rebuilding in his family\u2019s garage, Campbell added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis thing was almost finished,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\t
