{"id":32229,"date":"2016-06-05T13:03:18","date_gmt":"2016-06-05T13:03:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2016\/06\/05\/next-steps-for-navy-tattoo-rules-editorial\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T19:26:51","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T19:26:51","slug":"next-steps-for-navy-tattoo-rules-editorial","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/opinion\/2016\/06\/05\/next-steps-for-navy-tattoo-rules-editorial\/","title":{"rendered":"Next steps for Navy tattoo rules: editorial"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the end of May, the Navy adopted what is widely considered in the ranks to be\u00a0the military&#8217;s best tattoo rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The eased policy allows sailors to get inked on <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">wear art <\/span>more places on their bodies, an already popular move that\u2019s sure to keep in many more motivated sailors in the ranks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Navy leaders, including Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy Mike Stevens, deserve credit for driving through this common-sense update. But the adoption of these rules must only be the start. Three steps to ensure the rules are followed and serve everyone&#8217;s best interest:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Provide more training.<\/strong> The new rules will be enforced by commanding officers, executive officers and command master chiefs at the Navy\u2019s more than 1,500 commands. They and recruiters\u00a0need to be provided <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">get <\/span>training on enforcing the revised rules, with a focus on location and context rules. <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">Officials<\/span> Leaders need to give them clear examples of offensive tattoos and placement that\u2019s off limits, so they can evenly enforce the standards throughout the fleet.<\/li><li><strong>Establish an appeals process<\/strong>. Getting rid of a tattoo isn\u2019t easy \u2014 or painless. In cases in which <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">where <\/span>a sailor strenuously objects to his <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">\u00a0their <\/span>skipper&#8217;s ruling on <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">their <\/span>body ink, he should have the option to appeal to a\u00a0review. The Army, for example, allows soldiers to appeal their commander&#8217;s decision to an O-6 in their chain of command.\u00a0Another option would be an independent review that\u00a0could be set up in fleet concentration areas and handle cases<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">d in batches<\/span> as need arises. These would also ensure fairness across commands and could provide guidance on\u00a0<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">\u00a0send memos about <\/span>best practices and alerts on<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">, as well as concerning new <\/span>tattoo trends. <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">to look out for.<\/span><\/li><li><strong>Encourage sailors to be smart about tats. <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">twice<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"rte rte-comment\">. \u00a0<\/span>\u00a0Those in the chain of command must\u00a0<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">hen it comes to getting more\u00a0body art, all sailors must\u00a0ders must When it comes to body ink, <\/span>recognize the difference between can and should. The new <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">se <\/span>rules give sailors leeway to get a tattoo in places that include <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">like <\/span>the arms, hands, neck \u2014 even behind the ear. Sailors need to consider:\u00a0Any tattoos <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">that are <\/span>visible in work clothing \u2014 whether that be in the office or on the construction site \u2014 potentially\u00a0can affect future employment, promotion opportunities and other aspects of civilian life. <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">. And sailors must know that their tattoos could offend\u00a0Sailors also need to be mindful of how these visible tattoos will be seen by other cultures, whose cultural norms may stigmatize body art.<\/span><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s the job of everyone, from peers and leading petty officers to the wardroom, to make sure their shipmates think before they ink.\u00a0<span class=\"rte
