Alana Garas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe cause of death is being investigated, foul play is not suspected,\u201d according to an academy statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hiram police and the medical examiner there did not immediately return requests for further information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">James was born in Plainfield, New Jersey, but grew up in Hiram, where he was raised by his uncle, Linwood Welch Jr., according to the academy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He played football and wrestled in high school. Later, he attended the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usna.edu\/NAPS\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\">Naval Academy Prep School<\/a> before being selected for the academy and reporting to Annapolis in June 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2021\/05\/28\/at-us-naval-academy-graduation-harris-cites-challenges-of-fragile-world\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"193\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/USNA-Blue-Angels.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">At US Naval Academy graduation, Harris cites challenges of \u2018fragile\u2019 world<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The 1,084 U.S. Naval Academy graduates commissioned as officers Friday included 784 Navy ensigns and 274 Marine 2nd lieutenants.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m not ashamed to say that I loved every moment I spent with him,\u201d said Pamela Schmitt, James\u2019 academic advisor. \u201cHe was as kindhearted a soul as I\u2019ve ever met, and he will be missed by everyone who knew him.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI wish I\u2019d had the opportunity to give him a big ol\u2019 hug, because when I heard the news, every bone in my body hurt,\u201d she said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">James majored in English and played football his plebe year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are heartbroken to hear of Myles\u2019 passing,\u201d the academy\u2019s head football coach, Ken Niumatalolo, said in a statement. \u201cMyles was a great young man and was beloved by his brothers\/teammates. Rest in peace, Brother Myles.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Midshipman 1st Class Yenuel OrtizRodriguez knew James since prep school and recalled him as a class clown with an infectious personality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBut he was also so much more than that,\u201d OrtizRodriguez said in a statement. \u201cMyles was your brother, someone who always had your back and made sure you knew it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">OrtizRodriguez recalled being homesick for his family in Puerto Rico, and James welcoming him \u201cinto his home and into his family with open arms.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe touched my heart, and I am forever grateful for meeting him,\u201d OrtizRodriguez said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">James is survived by his uncle, Linwood Welch Jr., his mother, Stacy Welch and siblings, J.C. Thomas III and Brianna Thomas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Counseling services and support are being provided to academy students and staff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Funeral arrangements are pending, and more information will be provided as it becomes available.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;Someone who
