{"id":32435,"date":"2020-09-22T21:08:15","date_gmt":"2020-09-22T21:08:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2020\/09\/22\/super-hornet-makes-emergency-landing-after-engine-fire\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T19:26:18","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T19:26:18","slug":"super-hornet-makes-emergency-landing-after-engine-fire","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2020\/09\/22\/super-hornet-makes-emergency-landing-after-engine-fire\/","title":{"rendered":"Super Hornet makes emergency landing after engine fire"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A U.S. Navy fighter jet suffered an in-flight engine fire earlier this month, prompting an emergency landing, officials confirmed Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.northropgrumman.com\/what-we-do\/air\/fa18-superhornet\/\" target=_blank>F\/A-18F Super Hornet<\/a>, assigned to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/vfa103jollyrogers\/\" target=_blank>Strike Fighter Squadron 103<\/a> out of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnic.navy.mil\/regions\/cnrma\/installations\/nas_oceana.html\" target=_blank>Naval Air Station Oceana<\/a>, Virginia, was conducting routine training near the Virginia Capes at the time of the Sept. 10 mishap, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.public.navy.mil\/airfor\/Pages\/CNALCOS.aspx\" target=_blank>Naval Air Forces Atlantic<\/a> spokeswoman Cmdr. Jennifer Cragg said in an email.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The jet landed safely back at Oceana without incident and no one was injured, Cragg said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAn aviation mishap investigation has been initiated and will determine the causal factors associated with this incident,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was the fifth so-called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2020\/09\/14\/the-navy-suffered-four-class-a-aviation-mishaps-last-month\/\" target=_blank>\u201cClass A\u201d aviation mishap<\/a> involving a Super Hornet this fiscal year, which ends Sept. 30, according to Navy data.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2020\/09\/14\/the-navy-suffered-four-class-a-aviation-mishaps-last-month\/\" aviation mishaps last month<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">It was the worst month for mishaps this fiscal year, according to Navy data.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Class A mishaps involve property damage of at least $2.5 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The sea service has had 11 Class A manned and unmanned aviation mishaps this fiscal year, up from eight in fiscal 2019, according to the Naval Safety
