{"id":32460,"date":"2019-12-09T22:45:58","date_gmt":"2019-12-09T22:45:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2019\/12\/09\/navy-announces-monday-mustang-merger\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T19:35:52","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T19:35:52","slug":"navy-announces-monday-mustang-merger","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2019\/12\/09\/navy-announces-monday-mustang-merger\/","title":{"rendered":"Navy announces Monday mustang merger"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As part of an ongoing effort to modernize officer career paths, the chief of naval personnel on Monday folded mustangs with surface ordnance designators into the ranks of surface electronics experts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The change affects 601 personnel \u2014 commissioned limited duty officers from ensign to captain with 6180 and 6160 designators, plus all chief warrant officers with 7180 and 7160 designators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All are being formed into a combined combat systems designator \u201cto match against surface fleet billet requirements,\u201d according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.public.navy.mil\/bupers-npc\/reference\/messages\/NAVADMINS\/Pages\/NAVADMIN2019.aspx\" target=_blank>a naval message released Monday<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis merger will create a single and more robust technical talent pool while streamlining the training pipeline requirements for a single combat systems-centric community,\u201d said Chief of Naval Personnel Vice Adm. John Nowell in a prepared statement emailed to Navy Times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis will help mitigate imbalances between what were previously two separate designators without diluting technical leadership.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nowell\u2019s move is designed to create what his command calls \u201ca more robust and flexible personnel inventory to meet mission requirements\u201d that will free detailers to \u201cright-size\u201d the talent pool by creating combat systems technicians from a stable of experienced personnel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Officials also say it will allow a broader range of enlisted ratings \u2014 electronics technician, gunner\u2019s mate, fire controlman, fire controlman AEGIS, interior communications electrician, mineman and sonar technician (surface) \u2014 to commission as surface electronic LDOs or CWOs.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2019\/12\/02\/what-you-need-to-know-about-the-navys-sea-and-shore-tour-reforms\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/minesweeper.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">What you need to know about the Navy\u2019s sea and shore tour reforms<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">It&#039;s the first update since 2016.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The merger will unfurl in two phases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Phase I began Monday with the immediate conversion of all 616X\/716X billets to 618X\/718X.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Phase II will re-designate all officers. It\u2019s slated to kick off in early January.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Personnel who have submitted Fiscal Year 2021 applications for the LDO\/CWO In-Service Procurement Board will be considered for selection to the 616X\/618X or 716X\/718X designators, according to Monday\u2019s directive. Future announcement results and commissioning documents will reflect the 618X\/718X designator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Surface ordnance CWOs (716X) will continue to wear the current designator devices on the collars, sleeves, and shoulder boards until promoted to the next higher pay grades.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Officials say the move helps
