Joshua Corbett and Capt. Sven Jorgensen completed the training at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2023\/06\/02\/cherry-point-receives-its-first-f-35-jet\/\" target=\"_blank\">Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point<\/a>, North Carolina. The final flight assessment \u2014 conducted by the AV-8B Harrier II Fleet Replacement Detachment, Marine Aircraft Group 14, 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing \u2014 was a low-altitude, close-training sortie, according to the statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe significance of the last replacement pilot training flight in the Harrier community is that it is the beginning of the end for us as a community,\u201d Corbett said in the statement. \u201cThe Harrier, more than many aircraft than I have come across, elicits an emotional response. &#8230; All good things have to come to an end, and it\u2019s our turn soon, but not yet.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both pilots will report to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2023\/02\/10\/hazardous-firefighting-foam-accidentally-discharged-in-marine-hangar\/\" target=\"_blank\">Marine Attack Squadron 223<\/a>, also known as \u201cthe Bulldogs.\u201d The Harrier squadron will be the last of its kind in the Marine Corps and is slated to continue operations through September 2026, according to the statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Marine Corps will transition away from the vertical\/short takeoff and landing tactical attack aircraft and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2023\/12\/28\/new-in-2024-corps-gets-last-2-new-harrier-pilots-amid-aviation-revamp\/\">F\/A-18C\/D Hornet<\/a> aircraft as it moves to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2023\/06\/02\/cherry-point-receives-its-first-f-35-jet\/\" target=\"_blank\">F-35 Lightning II by the end of fiscal year 2030<\/a>, Marine Corps Times previously reported. Some Harrier and Hornet squadrons have already been deactivated as part of these moves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The AV-8B Harrier II first arrived at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, North Carolina, in 1983. Harrier pilots have supported numerous operations across the globe, including Operation Desert Storm, Operation Allied Force in the former Yugoslavia, Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom, according to the statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt is exciting to see our last two students graduate from the FRD and hit the fleet,\u201d said Lt. Col. Nathaniel Smith, the commanding officer of Marine Attack Squadron 223. \u201cOur team of pilots, maintainers, and supporting staff have done outstanding work in supporting both the FRD and VMA missions here.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><i>Correction: A previous version of this story misstated the year the first AV-8B Harrier II arrived at MCAS Cherry Point.
