{"id":33124,"date":"2017-05-22T20:35:13","date_gmt":"2017-05-22T20:35:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2017\/05\/22\/advancement-rates-for-petty-officers-rise\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T19:27:39","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T19:27:39","slug":"advancement-rates-for-petty-officers-rise","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2017\/05\/22\/advancement-rates-for-petty-officers-rise\/","title":{"rendered":"Advancement rates for petty officers rise"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Navy announced today that just over 25,000 sailors across the Navy will advance this week to pay grades E-4 through E-6. <br\/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In all, more than 96,000 sailors \u2014 including active-duty, reserve full-time support and selected reserve \u2014 passed this winter&#8217;s advancement exams and are competing for 25,050 advancement quotas, giving sailors a roughly 26 percent shot at moving up this cycle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That rate is up more than a full percentage point from last fall&#8217;s 24.5 percent, when 100,742 successful exam takers were competing for 24,628 advancement quotas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Navy officials released the spring quota data on Monday. The names of those advanced are expected to be released to commands on Tuesday and made public Wednesday. <br\/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Active-duty\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the active-duty side, opportunity increased at all paygrades for an overall advancement of about 25.5 percent, up from 23.9 percent last fall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A total of 91,493 sailors sat for their exams in March, with 88,040 cutting a passing score for a pass rate of 97 percent, down from last cycle&#8217;s 97.2 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a data-cms-href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/spring-cycle-235-e-4-quotas\" data-cms-id=\"0000015c-30a3-d756-affd-7aef85fc0000\" href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/spring-cycle-235-e-4-quotas\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Link: null\">Active E-4 advancement opportunity<\/a>\u00a0increased to 41.05 percent\u00a0\u2014 up from 38.01 percent last cycle\u00a0\u2014\u00a0with 9,491 quotas available.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a data-cms-href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/spring-cycle-235-e-5-quotas\" data-cms-id=\"0000015c-309f-d3c0-affe-b0ffd84e0000\" href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/spring-cycle-235-e-5-quotas\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Link: null\">Active E-5 advancement opportunity<\/a>\u00a0increased to 23.39 percent\u00a0\u2014 up from\u00a022.58 percent last cycle\u00a0\u2014\u00a0with 23,118 sailors competing for 8,310 quotas.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a data-cms-href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/spring-cycle-235-e-6-quotas\" data-cms-id=\"0000015c-309c-d51d-a9de-bebef8850000\" href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/spring-cycle-235-e-6-quotas\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Link: https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/spring-cycle-235-e-6-quotas\">Active E-6 advancement opportunity<\/a>\u00a0increased to 14.83 percent\u00a0\u2014\u00a0up from 12.15 percent last cycle \u2014 with 26,749 sailors competing for 3,968 quotas.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Reserve full-time support<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The full-time support community is again outpacing the active and drilling reserve components, with a just above a 37 percent chance to advance this spring, up from an already excellent 35.9 percent chance this past fall. It&#8217;s the third straight rise for FTS, up from a 30.5 percent opportunity a year ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This cycle, 1,975 FTS sailors took the March exams, with 1,804 receiving a passing score. They will compete for a total of 644 quotas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a data-cms-href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/reserve-full-time-support-spring-cycle-235\" data-cms-id=\"0000015c-3111-d5b5-af5f-ff1705960000\" href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/reserve-full-time-support-spring-cycle-235\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Link: null\">FTS E-4 advancement opportunity<\/a>\u00a0is the best in the service this cycle with 205 of the 215 earning quota for an advancement rate of 95.35 percent.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a data-cms-href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/reserve-full-time-support-spring-cycle-235\" data-cms-id=\"0000015c-3111-d5b5-af5f-ff1705960000\" href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/reserve-full-time-support-spring-cycle-235\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Link: https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/reserve-full-time-support-spring-cycle-235\">FTS E-5 advancement opportunity<\/a>\u00a0dropped to 46.02 percent\u00a0\u2014\u00a0down from last cycle&#8217;s 47.32 percent\u00a0\u2014 with 578 successful exam takers competing for 266 quotas.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a data-cms-href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/reserve-full-time-support-spring-cycle-235\" data-cms-id=\"0000015c-3111-d5b5-af5f-ff1705960000\" href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/reserve-full-time-support-spring-cycle-235\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Link: null\">FTS E-6 advancement opportunity<\/a>\u00a0increased to 19.68 percent \u2014 up from last cycle&#8217;s 15.81 percent \u2014 with 1,011 sailors competing for 199 quotas.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br\/> <b>Selected reserve.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Drilling reserve sailors are again seeing good advancement opportunity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In all, 9,280 reservists passed their advancement exams, and will compete for a total of 2,611 quotas, an advancement opportunity of just over 28 percent, up from last fall&#8217;s healthy 27.1 percent.
