Eric Smith<\/a>, 58, was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2023\/10\/31\/no-updates-on-top-marine-generals-condition-after-hospitalization\/\" target=\"_blank\">hospitalized Sunday<\/a> after experiencing the medical episode near his home at Marine Barracks Washington, the service previously said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHis baseline physical health has directly contributed to his rapid improvement and he is recovering as expected,\u201d the Marine Corps said in a news release Friday evening. \u201cOnce he is discharged from the hospital, he will continue his recovery at his military quarters, but will need to focus on his health prior to fully returning to duty.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Smith\u2019s hospitalization had left <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2023\/10\/30\/top-marine-general-hospitalized-leaving-3-star-as-acting-leader\/\" target=\"_blank\">Lt. Gen. Eric Smith was hospitalized Sunday evening following what the Marine Corps called a \u201cmedical emergency.\u201d<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2023\/11\/02\/no-2-marine-confirmed-by-senate-amid-top-marines-health-crisis\/\" target=\"_blank\">Gen. Christopher Mahoney<\/a> was sworn in as assistant commandant Friday morning, the day after his Senate confirmation, and has taken over from Heckl in doing the commandant\u2019s job for the time being.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, before Friday evening, the Marine Corps had provided no details about Smith\u2019s \u201cmedical emergency,\u201d citing his family\u2019s desire for privacy and medical privacy law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Only on Wednesday did the Marine Corps announce Smith was in \u201cstable condition.\u201d It was only with the Friday evening news release that the Corps confirmed Smith had experienced a sudden cardiac arrest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other news outlets previously reported Smith had experienced a heart attack, and a spokesman for D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services previously said the department <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2023\/10\/31\/no-updates-on-top-marine-generals-condition-after-hospitalization\/\" target=\"_blank\">had responded to a cardiac arrest<\/a> near Marine Barracks Washington, but the spokesman identified the patient only as \u201can adult male.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The news release said the Smith family was \u201cexceedingly grateful for the outpouring of support for General Smith\u201d and \u201cappreciative of the privacy that has been extended to them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGeneral Smith is extremely proud of how the Marine Corps continues to protect our Nation throughout this trying time,\u201d the Marine Corps news release Friday said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Smith\u2019s hospitalization has added to the controversy surrounding a hold on top military promotions by Sen. Tommy Tuberville, R-Alabama. Tuberville has held up confirmation of senior military nominees in protest of a Pentagon policy that provides paid leave and travel reimbursements for service members who travel out of state to get abortions, a policy he has called illegal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tuberville has argued the Senate could get around his hold by voting on nominees one by one, a process Senate Democrats say <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armed-services.senate.gov\/imo\/media\/doc\/fact_sheet_on_military_promotions_holds2.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">would last months<\/a> even if they disregarded all other business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The assistant commandant normally would be the one to take over if the office of the commandant becomes vacant, but Mahoney\u2019s confirmation was among those caught up in Tuberville\u2019s hold, which meant the top job fell to Heckl in the first days after Smith\u2019s medical emergency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mahoney was confirmed by roll-call vote, rather than the speedier unanimous consent process that Tuberville has blocked.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2023\/11\/03\/when-a-services-top-two-officers-arent-available-who-takes-charge\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Heckl-CM.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">When a service\u2019s top two officers aren\u2019t available, who takes charge?<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Who is the no. 3 officer in the military services? Smith said in September <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2023\/09\/18\/as-both-the-no-1-and-no-2-marine-his-schedule-is-not-sustainable\/\" target=\"_blank\">he was sleeping five hours a night<\/a> as he juggled the top two jobs in the Marine Corps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOne of the reasons, I think contributed to his condition was he was doing two jobs at once,\u201d Reed told Politico. \u201cI\u2019ve read where he was working from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. As a result, if he had, as is normal, an assistant, he could switch off.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tuberville on Thursday brushed off Reed\u2019s remarks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCome on, give me a break,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/alanhe\/status\/1720106004136829275\" target=\"_blank\">Tuberville said<\/a>. \u201cThis guy is going to work 18-20 hours a day no matter what.
