{"id":33598,"date":"2023-11-29T22:13:47","date_gmt":"2023-11-29T22:13:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2023\/11\/29\/how-marines-sailors-mules-and-a-king-stallion-recovered-a-downed-helo\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T21:08:09","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T21:08:09","slug":"how-marines-sailors-mules-and-a-king-stallion-recovered-a-downed-helo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2023\/11\/29\/how-marines-sailors-mules-and-a-king-stallion-recovered-a-downed-helo\/","title":{"rendered":"How Marines, sailors, mules and a King Stallion recovered a downed helo"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/aTU4_UmIkfE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen title=\"Rescue of downed Navy Seahawk by Marine King Stallion\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A Marine-led team in October recovered what was left of a Navy helicopter <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2023\/11\/02\/1-marine-injured-in-hard-landing-of-mv-22b-osprey-in-nevada\/\" target=\"_blank\">that had experienced a hard landing<\/a> during a rescue mission in the mountains of California.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2023\/09\/29\/sailors-marines-are-helping-clean-up-wreckage-of-crashed-f-35-jet\/\" target=\"_blank\"> massive recovery effort<\/a> of the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2022\/05\/04\/heres-what-caused-the-helicopter-crash-that-killed-five-sailors-in-august\/\" target=\"_blank\"> MH-60S Seahawk<\/a> from difficult terrain in Inyo National Forest, California, involved about 40 Marines and sailors, as well as personnel \u2014 and mules \u2014 from the Forest Service, according to leaders of the Marine helicopter squadron that led the mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Marines relied on the extremely powerful CH-53K King Stallion helicopter, which executed a minuteslong hover close to the mishap site three times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The downed Navy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2023\/09\/01\/navy-search-and-rescue-team-saves-sick-injured-hikers\/\" target=\"_blank\">search-and-rescue<\/a> helicopter from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2015\/05\/17\/nas-lemoore-is-a-hidden-gem-with-an-image-problem\/\" target=\"_blank\">Naval Air Station Lemoore, California, <\/a>had been attempting to recover a civilian hiker with a broken ankle on Sept. 30 when it experienced the hard landing, Sarah Thrasher, a spokeswoman for the air station, said Nov. 16. The naval air station has <a href=\"https:\/\/cnrsw.cnic.navy.mil\/Installations\/NAS-Lemoore\/Operations-and-Management\/Program-Links\/SAR\/\" target=\"_blank\">a small team of pilots and aircrew<\/a> trained in rescuing installation aircraft and personnel, as well as \u201canyone in legitimate danger,\u201d according to its website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Members of the four-person Seahawk crew reported minor injuries, but they and the hiker were off the mountain within 12 hours, according to Thrasher. The Navy is investigating the mishap, she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2023\/09\/29\/sailors-marines-are-helping-clean-up-wreckage-of-crashed-f-35-jet\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Jet-cleanup.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Sailors, Marines are helping clean up wreckage of crashed F-35 jet<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Hundreds of people from various agencies are helping recover what\u2019s left of the aircraft and clean up the area where a Marine F-35 jet crashed Sept. 17.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After aircraft mishaps, the Navy has a responsibility to remove the debris to restore the affected environment to \u201cthe best natural state possible,\u201d Thrasher said. The service also wants to protect military aircraft\u2019s proprietary technology and recover debris that it later analyzes as part of its mishap investigations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Marines from Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 461 were in Yuma, Arizona, supporting the Weapons and Tactics Instructor Course in mid-October when they officially got tasked with retrieving the Navy helicopter, commanding officer Lt. Col. Thomas Nicholson said Nov. 16.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The team had to do the mission before cold weather came to Mammoth Lakes, California, when snow could made a recovery more difficult. Snow can show up in the Sierra Nevada region as early as late October, Nicholson said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before the Marines could remove the Seahawk from the mountain, they had to do a site survey, Maj. Sean Graham, the squadron\u2019s operations officer, said Nov. 16. Navy Seabees and Marines from 2nd Distribution Support Battalion prepared the downed helo for the recovery, and the Forest Service cut nearby trees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Complicating these efforts was the remote location of the mishap site, which could be reached on foot only by hiking uphill for five miles, Nicholson said. Rowdy Vanskike\/Marine Corps)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA lot of work was done beforehand, and that was probably the primary thing that led to our success,\u201d Graham said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Oct. 20, the day of the big recovery, Graham and his crew of Marines flew a CH-53K King Stallion up to the crash site three times. Each time, the heavy-lift helicopter hovered for about four and a half minutes as Marines on the ground from 2nd Distribution Support Battalion attached the debris to the helo\u2019s slings, Graham said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Working below a close-to-the-ground helicopter, those Marines got whipped with 60\u201370 mile-per-hour wind, which also sprayed them with debris and cold water from a river, according to Graham.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And the photos taken of the scene don\u2019t capture how close the King Stallion was hovering to the trees and terrain, Nicholson said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The next complication: The King Stallion had to fly over a major road to get the debris to the Mammoth Yosemite Airport, Nicholson said. What if something dropped onto the cars below?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So once the King Stallion crested the mountains of the eastern edge of the mountain range, the California Highway Patrol quickly closed traffic on that road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019ll speak for the entire crew: From the pre-flight brief up into execution, it was very focused and very calm,\u201d Graham said. <\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/air\/2023\/08\/24\/us-navy-awards-sikorsky-27-billion-for-35-ch-53k-helicopters\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/20230711_53KGFA14_CH53K-IMAGE.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">US Navy awards Sikorsky $2.7 billion for 35 CH-53K helicopters<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The contract covers 12 lot 7 and 15 lot 8 aircraft for the U.S. Marine Corps, as well as eight aircraft for the Israeli Air Force.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2022\/09\/21\/hugely-powerful-new-marine-helicopter-makes-training-exercise-debut\/\">The King Stallion<\/a>, which can externally carry up to 27,000 pounds for 110 nautical miles, is part of the Marine Corps\u2019 plan for hauling Marines, heavy equipment and supplies from ship to shore. It\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navair.navy.mil\/product\/CH-53K-King-Stallion\">the most powerful helicopter<\/a> in the U.S. military, according to Naval Air Systems Command.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Back when the King Stallion was still in the test and evaluation phase, in September 2021, it executed a remarkably similar mission to the one in October: After a Navy Seahawk experienced a hard landing in the California mountains while attempting to rescue a lost hiker, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navair.navy.mil\/news\/CH-53K-King-Stallion-logs-first-successful-fleet-mission\/Wed-09082021-2033\" target=\"_blank\">a King Stallion transported the downed Navy helo<\/a> to a nearby airport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 461 is the first Marine squadron <a href=\"https:\/\/www.2ndmaw.marines.mil\/News\/Article-View\/Article\/2910478\/hmh-461-conducts-redesignation-ceremony\/\">to be transitioning from the CH-53E Super Stallion<\/a> to the more powerful CH-53K King Stallion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Corps said in 2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marines.mil\/News\/News-Display\/Article\/3010851\/marine-corps-declares-ioc-for-ch-53k-king-stallion\/\">it planned to deploy<\/a> the King Stallions on a Marine expeditionary
