The Army is interested"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"628\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/DOD_mp5-submachine-gun-on-table_cal0518.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-67007\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/DOD_mp5-submachine-gun-on-table_cal0518.jpg.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/DOD_mp5-submachine-gun-on-table_cal0518.jpg.jpg?resize=300,157 300w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/DOD_mp5-submachine-gun-on-table_cal0518.jpg.jpg?resize=768,402 768w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/DOD_mp5-submachine-gun-on-table_cal0518.jpg.jpg?resize=1024,536 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">INDIANAPOLIS \u2013 If a recent request by the Army\u2019s soldier weapons office is met, some soldiers could be carrying a 9mm <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/off-duty\/gearscout\/shot-show\/2018\/01\/22\/the-rattler-this-ultra-compact-rifle-provides-concealed-carry-for-special-ops-troops\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" style=\"\" target=\"_blank\">submachine <\/a>gun such as an Uzi or Heckler &amp; Koch MP5.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army is asking <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2018\/05\/07\/this-move-could-shave-20-pounds-off-a-belt-of-50-cal-ammo\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">industry <\/a>to showcase what kind of fully automatic, 9 mm subcompact <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2018\/05\/08\/armys-next-squad-weapon-will-fire-a-never-before-seen-ammo-combination\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">weapons <\/a>it has in its stocks through a recent posting on the fedbizopps website, a site for government contract postings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the Request For Information posting, the \u201c(Sub Compact Weapon) will be a full\/semi-automatic selectable variant.\u201d It must also have the Picatinny rail, familiar to soldiers on their existing M4 carbine.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/your-army\/2017\/10\/08\/the-armys-next-generation-squad-weapon-could-change-the-way-you-fight\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"214\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/ARM-AUSA-weapons.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">The Army\u2019s Next Generation Squad Weapon could change the way you fight<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Army researchers are digesting the results of a two-year study that took a comprehensive look at how to build the rifle, ammunition and fire control system together, in order to build the next generation of small arms.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Weapons of this sort have been in use in Special Operations Forces units such as SEAL teams and others who do close quarters battle and hostage rescue. The weapon has rapid fire capability for short ranges but the 9mm round limits overpenetration that might be common with 5.56mm M4-type weapons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lt. Col. Steven Power, product manager of Soldier Weapons for Program Executive Office-Soldier, mentioned the new posting at the National Defense Industrial Association Armament Systems forum here as one of several examples of quicker acquisition of weapons systems to meet soldier needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The focus of this weapon is not to outfit every soldier with a subcompact weapon but to focus it on those who might need a personal protection type weapon for certain missions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In January at the annual Shooting Hunting Outdoor Trade Show in Las Vegas, firearms company Sig Sauer unveiled a compact weapon specially built for SOF units called the MCX Rattler.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It packs a little more punch than the one being sought by regular Army.<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-smg-jwplayer-video\"><atype-video-jwplayer nostick=\"true\" playlisturl=\"https:\/\/cdn.jwplayer.com\/v2\/playlists\/fCzRqMW8?tags=91f27f2f-db8c-4073-8243-f138639160f2\" poster=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/video-poster-91f27f2f-db8c-4073-8243-f138639160f2.jpg\" aspectratio=\"16 \/ 9\" mute autostart=\"false\"><\/atype-video-jwplayer><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The Rattler is ultra-compact and can be used in a variety of missions on sea, air and land. (Daniel Woolfolk\/Staff)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Rattler fires the .300 Blackout round and measures just 16 inches when folded. The round is a more powerful design along the lines of the 5.56mm round so likely would not be used in the same settings as the subcompact gun being sought.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Industry officials have until May 19 to post their packages on the website.
